INTRODUCTION
In the dynamic and ever-evolving realm of modern corporate environments, the rapid expansion of commercial office spaces has become a hallmark of
progress and growth. As the workforce continues to flourish, the design and architecture of these office spaces have taken center stage, shaping the way
employees interact with their surroundings and, consequently, their overall well-being. Within this context, this architectural study seeks to address a pressing
concern: the growing toll that corporate environments are taking on the mental health and stress levels of employees.

The primary aim of this research is to explore and implement architectural interventions that can effectively reduce stress levels among corporate employees.
This endeavor encompasses a holistic approach, considering various architectural elements such as materials, colors, textures, spatial layouts, and environmental
factors. By harnessing the power of architectural design, we aim to transform corporate office spaces into more nurturing, inspiring, and harmonious
environments that promote the mental and emotional well-being of employees.

The significance of this research topic cannot be overstated in today's fast-paced and competitive corporate world. Stress-related issues, ranging from
burnout to decreased productivity and employee turnover, have become pervasive challenges faced by organizations worldwide. Stress not only impacts the
physical and mental health of employees but also affects their creativity, job satisfaction, and overall job performance.

Recognizing the profound influence of architecture on human behavior and well-being, this study endeavors to bridge the gap between architectural design
and employee well-being in corporate settings. By focusing on the strategic use of architectural elements and design principles, this research aims to
demonstrate how architects and designers can play a pivotal role in improving the quality of work environments and alleviating the stressors faced by
corporate employees.

As we delve into the exploration of materials, colors, textures, and spatial arrangements, we will uncover innovative approaches that have the potential to
transform corporate office spaces into havens of productivity, creativity, and mental well-being. This thesis underscores the intrinsic connection between
architecture and the human experience, emphasizing that a thoughtful and holistic architectural approach can lead to happier, healthier, and more productive
employees, ultimately benefiting both individuals and organizations alike.

WHAT IS THERAPEUTIC ARCHITECTURE ?
HEALING
The term “healing” is derived from a German word “heilen” which essentially means to make whole. That is to say, healing is not only limited to a
physical cure but rather a process which results in bringing the body back into balance by providing it with the appropriate stimuli and opportunities to
become restored to wholeness. Thus, healing environments are designed to promote harmony of mind and body. In this dissertation it is imperative
not to confuse a healing space with a hospital. Healing spaces can be found in several different environments and represented in different ways.
THERAPEUTIC ARCHITECTURE
Therapeutic architecture refers to an approach in designing physical spaces with the explicit
goal of promoting healing, well-being, and overall health for individuals who occupy or
interact with those spaces. This concept recognizes the impact that the built environment
can have on people's physical, mental, and emotional states. Therapeutic architecture is not
limited to healthcare settings but can also be applied to various environments, including
offices, educational institutions, and public spaces.
Key principles of therapeutic architecture include considerations for natural light, ventilation,
color schemes, spatial layout, and the use of materials—all aimed at creating an environment
that positively influences the well-being of its users. In healthcare contexts, therapeutic
architecture is often employed to enhance the patient experience, support the healing
process, and provide a comforting atmosphere.
The design principles of therapeutic architecture involve creating spaces that allow for
privacy, tranquility, and connection with nature. Elements like access to outdoor views,
greenery, and calming aesthetics contribute to the therapeutic qualities of a designed space.
Additionally, the concept extends beyond the physical attributes of a space to encompass
factors such as noise reduction, accessibility, and the overall sensory experience. *Space depicting peace and

WHAT IS HEALING ARCHITECTURE ?
The human body has the ability to "self - heal" when put in healthy and positive environment.
Environment holds ability to stimulate the senses. This helps minimize negative effects of
stress on the body guiding a positive psychological response.
Healing is the process of re-establishing harmony within the organism, reintegration with the
body's natural ability to heal and regenerate, healing is not a process of curing. Health is
understood as the presence of this balance; illness is it lack.
Neuroscientists have found "good architecture can positively affect human brain".

"If place can make you happy, can it also make you well?" - Esther Sternberg
The goal is to engage patients in the process of healing and recovery. As a result, spaces should be
designed to reduce patient and family stress. Healing through architecture aims to:
Eliminate environment stresses, such as noise, lack of privacy, poor air quality and glare.
Connect patients to nature.
Enhance the patient's feeling by offering options and choices e.g- privacy versus socialization, type
of music etc.
Encourage opportunities for social support
Inspire feelings of peace, hope, reflection and spiritual connection.

RELATION BETWEEN CORPORATE SECTORS AND
HEALING ARCHITECTURE

It is an evolving concept that recognizes the impact of the physical environment on

the well-being and productivity of employees. Healing architecture principles can be
applied to corporate spaces to create work environments that foster the physical,
mental, and emotional health of individuals.

Apple Park, Cupertino, California, USA:

Natural Elements:
Apple Park is known for its extensive use of natural elements, including a 175-acre
park with more than 9,000 native and drought-resistant trees. The campus itself is
designed with open spaces, walking trails, and outdoor work areas to encourage
employees to connect with nature.
Integrating natural materials, colors, and patterns in corporate spaces can create a
more visually appealing and calming [Link] and Views: Providing ample
access to natural light and views of the outdoors supports circadian rhythms, helping
regulate sleep-wake cycles and overall well-being.

Biophilic Design: The main building, often referred to as the "Spaceship," features curved
glass walls that provide ample natural light and offer views of the surrounding landscape.
The incorporation of trees, both inside and outside the building, enhances the biophilic
design.

12
Well-being and Productivity:
Stress Reduction: Healing architecture in corporate spaces focuses on reducing stress through the use of natural light,
comfortable furniture, and biophilic elements, contributing to improved employee well-being and productivity.
Connection to Nature: Incorporating elements such as indoor plants, green walls, or views of nature can enhance
employees' connection to the natural environment, positively impacting their mood and focus.

Microsoft Campus, Redmond, Washington, USA:

Well-being and Productivity: Microsoft has been investing in the well-being of its employees through its Redmond
campus redesign. This includes the creation of The Commons, an area that features open spaces, natural light, and a
variety of dining options. The focus is on providing spaces that support collaboration and employee satisfaction.
Sensory Design: The campus includes outdoor spaces with water features, art installations, and greenery to engage
employees' senses and contribute to a more holistic work environment.

ASPECTS OF DESIGN
SPACE PLANNING
Space planning is the laying out and determination of the intended uses of a space (or several spaces) in
any architectural project. It should be carefully based upon the client’s functional requirements. On top of
that, it’s also a good opportunity to incorporate the program as an important element into the architectural
concept of the project.

SPACE PLANNING IN CORPORATE OFFICES

DIFF ZONES IN OFFICE SPACES
Quiet zones: This type of zone refers to an independent space where employees can work privately, or focus
without any distractions, and team members can fully concentrate on their work. The benefits of supplying a
quiet space for your staff are endless. In a quiet space, team members can relax without having to leave the
office. Providing a dedicated quiet area is invaluable, as it enables staff to confidently come to the office even
when they need to be at their most productive
Collaboration zones: This zone is a dedicated area for informal and formal collaboration. Different moments of
connection are encouraged. Staff comes together to work in small or large groups, and in planned or
spontaneous ways. The zones should be equipped with the resources they need for in-person or hybrid
interaction. Collaboration zones encourage employees to make noise, bounce ideas off each other and solve
problems as a unit. Creating spaces that inspire creativity and innovation, creates a greater sense of belonging
and purpose
Open-work zones: Teamwork is crucial for supporting a positive company culture and increases efficiency
and engagement. This type of zone is generally an open area, equipped with ergonomic desks, but also

LIGHT AND THERAPY
“THE MORE LIVING THE LIGHT THE MORE APPEALING THE PLACES”
Light plays a critical role in human life and daily affairs that we can hardly imagine our existence without it. It
permits one to function at a basic level and it also plays a key factor in our psychological and physiological
health. It is commonly known that sunlight is highly beneficial to human’s health.
Organs responsible for hormonal regulation also benefit from daylight and when it lacks, depression and
other physical and social issues start to develop. Natural light and interior lighting have a major impact on
human’s feelings, and thE control of light is considered essential in
order to promote a healthy environment
The built environment needs to utilize natural lighting by providing architectural elements that bring light
into the interior, such as skylights, courtyards, and atriums, in order to maximize interaction between building
users and sunlight. .
Moreover, daylight, when approached correctly, brings energy and joy into buildings, keeping in mind
that the amount of light varies from activity to another.
Daylight not only enhances the visual appeal of spaces but also plays a crucial role in regulating our circadian
rhythms. Exposure to natural light helps synchronize our internal body clocks, leading to improved sleep patterns,
mood regulation, and overall productivity.
IMPORTANCE OF ARTIFICIAL LIGHT
The artificial lighting should be highly flexible and adaptable to one’s needs, i.e. it should provide a
comforting feel to OCCUPANTS while reading and well illumination to staff . Interior designers while
designing a house or building should take into consideration the amount and the available type and
dimensions of light in design.

factors such as glare and thermal discomfort may actually affect mood and task performance negatively.
While there isn’t convincing evidence linking the presence ofwindows to improved mood and
performance outcomes, it is clear that natural light is the preferred source of light for most people. It is
important to provide access to daylight along with opportunity to control glare and lighting levels 15
EMOTIONAL RESPONSES TO DIFF COLOR
Colour has the power to influence brain activity, heart rate, muscular tension and
other functions related to the nervous system. It also produces emotional
and aesthetic responses that can be either therapeutic or harmful. It is
essential to understand that different emotions are triggered by different
colours, and in order to enhance the level of people’s well- being, we need to
be able tO distinguish the spectrum of colours and their effects on human health.

Green: Strengthens bones and muscles, disinfects bacteria and

virus, and relieves tension; used to treat malaria, back problems,
cancer, nervous disorders, and ulcers, and to manage heart problems Red: It enhances blood circulation and pressure, and can be beneficial at the physical
and blood pressure. exercise places, but, it should be kept away from the calming and relaxation areas such as

Yellow: brings happiness and mental creativity. It can help with the five senses; used to treat colds, paralysis, anemia, ailments of the bloodstream and
issues related to depression, tension, mental and nervous ailments of the lung.

White: brings purity, positivity and innocence. It is believed that

white has the power of enhancing the spiritual characteristics
when added to any colour. White suggests coolness and
cleanliness
Blue: brings stillness, serenity and faith. It reduces blood pressure,
heart beat and brain waves. Blue can be used in calming

FURNITURES IN OFFICES
SOFT FURNISHINGS
Office furniture plays an enormous role in setting the tone and spatial experience. Office furniture indirectly and directly influences the human mind-body systems,
either through a series of choreographed motions when maneuvering through the space, or when being utilized by workers - establishing a physical connection.
This pillar of the theoretical framework will enlighten this thesis in reimagining the means to wellness architecture.
Soft furnishings like rugs are a great way to bring warmth and a relaxed atmosphere to
your office space. They can also help to reduce noise levels. Add a pop of color to your office space with a green
wall filled with plan life. This biophillic interior design is
meant to connect the occupants with nature as a part
of creating a healing environment in a stressful
workplace.

HOW OFFICE SPACE CAN INTEGRATE WITH NATURE?

Maximize access to natural light.
Studies show more than one-third of employees don’t feel they get enough natural
light, despite overwhelming evidence that access to sunlight affects our mood and
overall mental health.
If windows are reserved for individual offices along the perimeter of your floor plan,
install glass walls that will allow light through to the rest of your space. Alternatively,
convert one or more of these offices into communal areas where employees can take
a break or camp out with their laptop.

systems and select healthy materials to
eliminate off-gassing of volatile organic
compounds (VOCs). Air quality should be
monitored to determine if additional ventilation,
filtration management, moisture and humidity
control, or other measures are needed to
preserve optimal air quality.

Have a dedicated relaxation room.

Work today is fast-paced and we’re all bombarded with
information, notifications and new tasks. It’s important to have
spaces within the office where workers can go to recharge during
the day. Incorporating natural elements within these spaces can
help rejuvenate and refresh workers, who can then return to their
work energized and refreshed. All images are courtesy of Eric Laignel, M Moser Associates 21
