Moment of Force in Crane Operations

The document discusses the importance of moments in crane operations, emphasizing that the load's moment must not exceed the crane's moment to prevent toppling. It illustrates practical applications of turning effects in everyday tools like screwdrivers and wrenches, where increasing the perpendicular distance allows for greater moments with less force. Additionally, it explains the concept of double pivot and provides a practical example involving a fishing pole to demonstrate the balance of moments.

THEORETICAL APPLICATIONS OF MOMENTS

While loading and unloading a crane, it has to be ensured

that the moment produced by the arm due to the load
never exceeds the moment produced by the crane. If the
moment produced by the load exceeds the moment
produced by the crane, the entire crane may topple over.

When a very heavy load is to be lifted, the length of the arm

should be shortened. Moment depends on both force and
perpendicular distance. If the arm is shortened, the
perpendicular distance decreases which in turn decreases
the moment produced by the load.

APPLICATIONS OF TURNING EFFECT

In everyday life, the turning effect of forces plays a vital role. Some of them are discussed below:

Example #1: Screwdriver

While unscrewing a tightly positioned screw, it is always easier to use a screwdriver with a long shaft. This
increases the perpendicular distance; a greater moment can be produced by applying a smaller force.

Example #2: Wrench

While fastening or unscrewing a bolt using a wrench, it is

always easy to use one with a larger handle. This
increases the perpendicular distance; a greater moment
can be produced by applying a smaller force.
CONCEPT OF DOUBLE PIVOT

If the mass is If the mass is moved If the mass is moved

in the middle, towards A, RA > RB towards B, RB > RA
RA = RB

PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

• To keep the fishing pole horizontal, the total clockwise moment

must be equal to the total anti-clockwise moment.

• For A, B’s hand is the pivot. Since the perpendicular distance

from the fishing bag to the pivot (B’s hand) is greater, the anti-
clockwise moment produced by the fishing bag is greater. To
produce the same clockwise moments, A must produce/exert a
greater force.

• For B, A’s hand is the pivot. Since the perpendicular distance

from the fishing bag to the pivot (A’s hand) is smaller, the
clockwise moment produced by the fishing bag is also smaller. To
produce the same anti-clockwise moment, B must exert a smaller
force.
Simpler Explanation:
Total clockwise moment is equal to total anticlockwise moment
Fishing bag is closer to A
Perpendicular distance is smaller, therefore A must exert a larger force
ADVANCED CONCEPTS

If the mass is placed on A, If the mass is placed on B,

RB = 0 RA = 0
RA = W RB = W
