Maths Class Notes: Topic – Area and Perimeter
Understanding area and perimeter is key in geometry and helps us solve real-life
problems like measuring spaces and building objects.
Perimeter: This is the distance around a shape. To find the perimeter, you add
the lengths of all the sides.
Rectangle: Perimeter = 2 × (length + width)
Square: Perimeter = 4 × side
Triangle: Add all three sides
Area: This is the space inside a shape.
Rectangle: Area = length × width
Square: Area = side × side
Triangle: Area = ½ × base × height
Circle: Area = π × radius² (π ≈ 3.14)
Units:
Perimeter is measured in units (e.g., cm, m)
Area is measured in square units (e.g., cm², m²)
Examples:
A rectangle with length 8 cm and width 3 cm:
Perimeter = 2 × (8 + 3) = 22 cm
Area = 8 × 3 = 24 cm²
A square with sides of 5 cm:
Perimeter = 4 × 5 = 20 cm
Area = 5 × 5 = 25 cm²
Being able to calculate area and perimeter is useful in many careers, including
architecture, engineering, and design.
