mb for its essay.

+ Length: between 2500 and 3000 words
+ Font: Times New Roman, font size: 13, line spacing: 1.5
+ Referencing and citation: APA style

instructor’s name, submission date.
- Submit the hard copy no later than May 9, 2025; submit the soft copy for plagiarism
check on the same date.
B. Prompts for group essays
1. Mini Dictionary – Compile a mini dictionary of novel lexical items
- Look for “new” or “unusual” lexical items in your own speech community or from
other linguistic landscapes (news reports, social media posts, TV shows, magazines,
etc.) Include both Vietnamese and English words and expressions if possible. Observe
and note down all the words and expressions you suspect you wouldn’t find in a
dictionary.
- Think about the possible definitions of the lexical items and how they can be used.
Afterwards, look them up in a good dictionary and compare with what you have written
earlier.
- Write a full dictionary-style entry for each word/expression, including the following
information: word/expression, word class, expected meaning, dictionary meaning (if
any), and usage.
- Comment on the popularity of those lexical items. How do you think the emergence of
such lexical items are connected to societal change and development? How can you
explain their divergence from their dictionary meanings? Who tend to use them? Do
you think they will stay around for long, and why/why not?
- In the appendices, include the transcriptions/texts where the lexical items appear.
2. Political Texts – Analyse a text that is political
- Find a text that is political in some way, except political speeches from politicians. The
text might come from an activist, a celebrity, or someone on social media. You may
also select and compare several texts from the same person, or several texts from
different people but with the same purpose.
- Examine the text carefully. Why is this text political? What is the goal of the text? Is it
intended to inform or persuade? Are there any other purposes? Is it emotional or a
rational? How is the argument constructed?
- Provide evidence from the specific linguistic choices made to justify your conclusions
about the speech. (Look at Lectures 2, 3, and 4 for the tools and concepts you can use.)
- In the appendices, include the transcriptions of the text(s).
3. Representation of Gender – explore the representation of any gender
- Choose an issue and medium to focus on. Suggestions: news stories involving a
particular gender, how a politician or celebrity is written about, or how health and
fashion features aimed at different audiences are constructed, etc.
- Collect data from newspapers, magazines, television, and the internet. Data may be
written or audiovisual.
- Analyze the data. What words are used to address and describe people? What adjectives
are used? How are the arguments constructed? What values and ideologies underlie the
representations you find?
- In the appendices, include the transcriptions/text(s)/pictures you use as data.
4. Texts and Social Media – analyze personal language use on social media
- Choose one of the platforms you use to communicate with other people. Observe all
your incoming and outgoing messages for a period of time. How does the language
differ from other kinds of written language? Are there differences in syntax, spelling,
and lexical choices? Are other symbols or images used? Does the communication share
any features with face-to-face conversations, or how are they different?
- Exchange notes with your friends. Why do they use the particular platform they do?
Do they use language differently there than in other contexts? Have they noticed
communicative conventions? Has their language use in other areas changed?
- Synthesise the findings from all group members.
- In the appendices, include the transcriptions/pictures of the messages.
