Passage 1: The Desert Fox
The desert is a harsh place to live, but the fennec fox has adapted well to its environment. This small fox is native
to the Sahara Desert and has large ears that help it stay cool by releasing heat. It is mostly active at night, avoiding
the extreme heat of the day. The fennec fox digs burrows in the sand to stay cool and hide from predators. Despite
the tough conditions, the desert fox thrives because of its special adaptations.
Passage 2: The Arctic Fox
In contrast to the fennec fox, the Arctic fox lives in one of the coldest environments on Earth. This fox has thick
white fur that keeps it warm and helps it blend into the snowy landscape. The Arctic fox also builds burrows, but to
keep warm instead of cool. It hunts small animals and scavenges for food. Like the desert fox, the Arctic fox is a
survivor, perfectly suited for its freezing home.
