Final Questions of Hydrulics: Fall 2020

The document contains final questions on hydraulics from Fall 2020, covering topics such as the advantages of mechanical systems over fluid power systems, primary functions of fluid power systems, and disadvantages of air versus oil hydraulic systems. It also defines viscosity index, lists main components of hydraulic systems, and includes requests for sketches of pump characteristics and valve symbols. Additionally, it addresses concepts like pressure compensating vane pumps and pressure override in pressure control valves.

Final questions of hydrulics:

Fall 2020
1. What are the advantages of mechanical system versus to
fluid power system?
-No mess due to leakage problems
-No danger of bursting of hydraulic lines
-No fire hazard due to oil leakage.
2. Mention the primary functions of a fluid power systems?

Fluid Power is the technology that deals with the

generation, control and transmission of power using
pressurized [Link] is one of the three means of
transmitting power.
- fluid means
-mechanical means
-applying electrical energy.

[Link] excessive heat
3. State three disadvantages of using air versus to oil
hydraulic systems.
• Due to compressibility, it cannot be used in an application where
accurate positioning or rigid holding is required
• Due to compressibility, It tends to be sluggish
• Air can be corrosive, since it contains oxygen and water vapor
• A lubricant must be added to air to lubricate valves and actuators
• Air pressure of greater than 17 bar are typically not used due to
explosion dangers involved if components such as air tanks should
rupture.
4. Define the viscosity index VI? What is indicated by high
VI?
Viscosity Index; (V.I.)
•V.I. is an empirical number indicating the rate of change in
viscosity of an oil within a given temperature range.
•Low viscosity index means a relatively large change in viscosity
with temperature, whereas a high viscosity index shows a
relatively small change in
viscosity with temperature.
5. What are the main components of any hydraulic system?
• Prime mover: An electric motor or internal combustion
engine
• Pump: for pushing the hydraulic fluid
• Hydraulic Circuit: Valves and pipelines those used in
transmitting the fluid to the actuator
• Actuator: Hydraulic cylinder or hydraulic motor
• External load: Force or torque
6. Draw the pump characteristic curves for (a) Non-Positive
displacement pump (b) Positive displacement pump.

Non positive curve:

7. Explain with help of simple sketch drawing the pressure compensating vane pump .
8. Draw the relation of Pressure- Discharge curve for pressure compensating van
pump, then define the dead head pressure and cut off

9. Draw the graphical symbol for 3-position, 4-ways, closed center,

spring return, solenoid actuated directional control valve.
10. Explain with the help of drawing what is the
“pressure override” in pressure control valve.
