SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT GOALS
(SDG)
The Sustainable
Development
Goals (SDGs)
are 17 goals
created by the
United Nations
to make the
world a better
place to be.
These goals
were adopted
by all UN
member states
in 2015 as part
of the 2030
Agenda for
Sustainable
Development.

WHY DO WE
NEED THE
SDGS?
The world faces many complex
challenges. The SDGs provide a
roadmap for countries to work
together to address these issues and
create a more sustainable future.
HISTORY OF SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT GOALS
The 1972 Stockholm Conference
laid the groundwork for integrating
sustainable development into a
nation’s framework. Millennium
Development Goals (MDGs) were
then adopted in 2000, consisting of
8 primary goals. This further
expanded to the 17 SDG goals and
was implemented from 2015, aiming
to achieve them by 2030 as much
as possible.

THE 17 SDG
Goal 1: No Poverty
Many people in the world don't have enough food, clothes, or a safe
place to live. This makes it hard for them to be happy and healthy.
Goal 1 aims to end poverty in all its forms everywhere, so everyone
has access to basic needs. Example: A school provides free
uniforms and books to students who don’t have access to the
same.
Goal 2: Zero Hunger
Some people don't have access to nutritious food, which can make
them weak and sick. Hunger can affect their ability to learn and
work. Goal 2 works towards ensuring no one goes hungry and
promotes sustainable agriculture. Example: A community garden
grows fruits and veggies for a local food bank.
Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being
Staying healthy is crucial and not all have access to good health
care. Goal 3 focuses on providing quality healthcare, ensuring
healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages. Example: A
school has a health clinic with a nurse who provides check-ups and
health advice.
Goal 4: Quality Education
Not everyone gets to go to school and learn
new things. Education is key to personal
growth and development. Goal 4 ensures
everyone gets a good education. Example: A
library offers free books and reading
programs for kids.
4
Goal 5: Gender Equality
Some people are treated unfairly because of their gender and
everyone deserves equal opportunities. Goal 5 promotes gender
equality and empowers all women and girls.. Example: A school
encourages both boys and girls equally to participate in sports
activities.
Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
Many people don't have access to clean water or proper toilets.
Clean water is essential for health and hygiene. Goal 6 works
towards providing safe drinking water and sanitation for all.
Example: A village installs water purification systems.
Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy
Using renewable energy helps the planet. Some people overuse
electricity or use energy that harms the planet. Renewable energy
sources like solar and wind power can provide clean and affordable
energy. Goal 7 promotes clean energy and access to affordable,
reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all. Example: A school
installs solar panels to power its buildings.
Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
Some people work long hours for little pay or in unsafe conditions.
Fair labor practices and safe working conditions are essential for
workers' well-being. Fair jobs and economic growth benefit
everyone. Goal 8 supports entrepreneurship and job creation.
Example: A youth entrepreneurship program teaches kids how to
start a small business.
Goal 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
Some communities lack safe roads, bridges, and buildings.
Infrastructure development is crucial for economic growth and
sustainable development. Innovation, on the other hand, drives
progress. Goal 9 fosters innovation and builds infrastructure. Eg: A
science fair in school provides students with the opportunity to
invent solutions or school may build a cycle stand for students
5
Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities
Some people are treated unfairly because of their background
or circumstances. Reducing inequalities is essential for
promoting social justice and human rights. Everyone deserves
equal opportunities. Goal 10 reduces inequalities within and
among countries. Example: A program provides scholarships
to underprivileged students.
Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
Some cities are dirty, noisy, or unsafe. Sustainable urban planning
and management are crucial for creating livable cities. Goal 11
promotes urban planning and green spaces to make cities
inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. Example: A city builds
parks and bike lanes.
Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and
Production
We produce a lot of waste and use resources inefficiently.
Sustainable consumption and production patterns can reduce
waste and promote environmental sustainability. Goal 12
encourages sustainable consumption. Example: A school
starts a recycling program.
Goal 13: Climate Action
The planet is facing climate change, which can cause big
problems. Climate change affects ecosystems, economies, and
human societies. Goal 13 promotes climate action to reduce
activities that affect it. Example: A community plants trees to
reduce its carbon footprint.
6
Goal 14: Life Below Water
Our oceans are facing pollution and overfishing. Marine
conservation is essential for protecting marine ecosystems
and promoting sustainable fishing practices. Goal 14
conserves marine ecosystems. Example: A beach cleanup
event engages kids in ocean conservation.
Goal 15: Life on Land
Our forests, wildlife, and natural habitats are facing threats.
We have to protect, restore, and promote sustainable use of
terrestrial ecosystems, manage forests, reduce desertification,
lower land degradation, and stop biodiversity loss. Goal 15
raises awareness about the need to preserve ecosystems for
the future. Example: An environmental club in school helps
students raise awareness for the same
Goal 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong
Institutions
Some communities face conflict, violence, or unfair treatment,
which may even lead to war. Promoting peace, justice, and
strong institutions is essential for ensuring human rights and
social stability. Goal 16 promotes peaceful societies at all
levels. Example: A school has a peer mediation program and
a no-bullying motto.
Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals
Collaboration achieves more and builds relations within and
between countries. Goal 17 fosters partnerships. Example: Local
businesses partner with schools to support community
projects.
7
SDGs serve as a means to tackle
IMPORTANCE OF SDG global challenges, promote
sustainable development, uplift
human rights and support future
generations. India, being a diverse
country, like many other regions,
faces challenges related to poverty,
education, and environmental
sustainability. By working towards the
SDGs, students and communities can
contribute to improving healthcare
and education, promoting
sustainable agriculture and water
management, bridging the poverty
gap, supporting renewable energy,
and reducing waste to make a
positive difference both within and
between countries.
