Problems On Heat Transfer

The document presents four problems related to heat transfer through walls and windows, each requiring calculations based on given dimensions, thermal conductivities, and temperature differences. Problem 1 involves a wall with specific dimensions and temperatures to determine heat loss, while Problem 2 focuses on heat flow and temperature gradient through another wall. Problems 3 and 4 deal with heat transfer through a glass window and a furnace wall, respectively, requiring the application of thermal conductivity and temperature measurements.

PROBLEM 1:

Consider a 3 m high, 5 m wide and 0.3 m thick wall whose

thermal conductivity is k = 0.9 Wm-1K-1. On a certain day,
the temperatures of the inner and outer surfaces of the wall
are measured to be 16oC and 2oC respectively. Determine
the rate of heat loss through the wall on that day.
PROBLEM 2:
Heat is flowing through a plain wall of area 4m2 and 150
mm thickness. The thermal conductivity of the wall is 9.36
Wm-1k-1. The surface temperature of the walls are fixed at
350oC and 30oC. Determine
a) Heat flow through the wall
b) Temperature gradient of the wall
PROBLEM 3:
Consider a 0.8 m high and 1.5 m wide glass window
with a thickness of 8 mm and a thermal conductivity of
0.78 Wm-1k-1. Determine the steady rate of heat transfer
through this glass window and the temperature of its
inner surface for a day during which the room is
maintained at 20oC while the temperature of the outdoor
is -10oC. Take the heat transfer co-efficient on the inner
and outer surfaces of the window to be 10 Wm-2k-1 and
40 Wm-2k-1 respectively.
PROBLEM 4:
A wall of furnace is made up of inside layer of silica brick
120 mm thick covered with a layer of magnesite brick of
240 mm thickness. The temperatures at the inside surface of
silica brick wall and outside surface of magnesite brick wall
are 725oC and 110oC respectively. The contact resistance
between the two walls at the interface is 0.0035 oC/W per
unit wall area. If thermal conductivities of silica and
magnesite bricks are 1.7 Wm-1k-1 and 5.8 Wm-1k-1, then
calculate the rate of heat loss per unit area of walls and
temperature drop at the interface.
