WEEK 1

Revision/kick-off test/Intonation patterns in Commands and Questions
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, students should be able to;
1. define intonation;
2. state the intonation pattern in commands;
3. state the intonation pattern in different types of questions;
4. identify and produce the intonation patterns in given sentences.
Intonation refers to the rise and fall of the voice when someone is speaking. Thus, there are rising tone and
falling tone. The rise and fall of the voice pitch while speaking (intonation) helps to convey meaning,
express emotions and maintain the rhythm of speech. E.g. She’s here already. (falling tone) She’s here
already? (rising tone) She’s here already! (rising tone)
Commands
A command is an order or instruction. Commands, generally, have falling intonation.
Examples
i. Leave this room. (The voice pitch is high on ‘leave’ and falls on ‘room.’)
ii. Return the books immediately. (The voice falls on ‘immediately.’)
Questions
A question is a sentence that asks for information or confirmation about something. It is usually meant to
elicit a information from the listener.
1. Polar Questions or Yes/No Questions: These are questions that require ‘yes’ or ‘no’ for an answer.
They have rising tone. E.g. Did you go to school today?
2. Open-ended Questions: They are questions that require detailed explanation. They have slight
rising tone. E.g. Can you tell me why delayed the job?
3. Wh-Questions: They are questions that begin with wh-words (who, what, which, where, when, why
and how). Wh-questions have usually have falling tone. E.g. What is your name?
