1 INTRODUCTION

Dear Student
Welcome to Administrative Management IB (ADB1602). This tutorial letter and the prescribed
book are only available in English.

I am pleased to welcome you to this module and hope that you will find it both interesting and
rewarding. I will do my best to make your study successful. You will be well on your way to
success if you start studying early in the first semester and resolve to do the assignments
properly.

This module is a blended module. You can use the paper-based or online method. Unisa will
mail the (MO001) tutorial letter to you, but remember that is also available online on myUnisa.

Some of the tutorial material may not be available when you register. Unisa will post
tutorial material that is not available when you register, to you as soon as it is available.
You have the option to access your study material online or to make use of printed
material.

Read Tutorial Letter 101, as it provides important general information about studying at an open
distance e-learning (ODeL) at Unisa.

In Tutorial Letter 101, you will find the assignments and assessment criteria, as well as
instructions on the preparation and submission of the assignments. This tutorial letter also
provides all the information you need about the prescribed study material and other resources,
and how to obtain them. Study this information carefully and make sure that you obtain the
prescribed material as soon as possible.

Right from the start, I would like to point out that you must read all the tutorial letters you
receive during the semester immediately and carefully, as they always contain important
information.

I trust that you will enjoy this module, and wish you all the best!

2 PURPOSE AND OUTCOMES

2.1 Purpose

The aim of this module is to introduce you to the field of Administrative Management in the
organisation. The field of Administrative Management is dynamic and challenging. The learning
outcomes and assignments contained in this module will provide you with opportunities to
explore the latest developments in the field. They will also help you discover the field of
Administrative Management as it is practised today.

4
2.2 Outcomes

You should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the function of communication and its
management in an office/administrative environment. This understanding will enable you to
create and manage communication channels and describe the different skills of an
administrative manager in communication, the business management principles and the
Classification of the business and its environment

3 CURRICULUM TRANSFORMATION

Unisa has implemented a transformation charter based on five pillars and eight dimensions. In
response to this charter, we have placed curriculum transformation high on the teaching and
learning agenda. Curriculum transformation includes the following pillars: student-centred
scholarship, the pedagogical renewal of teaching and assessment practices, the scholarship of
teaching and learning, and the infusion of African epistemologies and philosophies. These
pillars and their principles will be integrated at both programme and module levels as a phased-
in approach. You will notice a marked change in the teaching and learning strategy
implemented by Unisa, together with how the content is conceptualised in your modules. We
encourage you to embrace these changes during your studies at Unisa in a responsive way
within the framework of transformation.

6 STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES

The Study @ Unisa website is available on myUnisa: www.unisa.ac.za/brochures/studies

The website has all the tips and information you need to succeed at Unisa.

6.1 First-Year Experience Programme @ Unisa

For many students, the transition from school education to tertiary education is beset with
anxiety. This is also true for first-time students to Unisa. Unisa is a dedicated open distance and
e-learning institution. Unlike face-to-face/contact institutions, Unisa is somewhat different. It is a
mega university and all our programmes are offered through a blended learning mode or fully
online learning mode. It is for this reason that we thought it necessary to offer first-time students
additional/extended support so that you can seamlessly navigate the Unisa teaching and
learning journey with little difficulty and few barriers. In this regard we offer a specialised student
support programme to students entering Unisa for the first time. We refer to this programme as
Unisa’s First-Year Experience (FYE) Programme. The FYE is designed to provide you with
prompt and helpful information about services that the institution offers and how you can access
information. The following FYE programmes are currently offered:

• FYE website: All the guides and resources you need to navigate through your first year at
Unisa can be accessed using the following link: www.unisa.ac.za/FYE

• FYE e-mails: You will receive regular e-mails to help you stay focused and motivated.

• FYE broadcasts: You will receive e-mails with links to broadcasts on various topics related to
your first-year studies (eg videos on how to submit assignments online).

• FYE mailbox: For assistance with queries related to your first year of study, send an e-mail
to [email protected]

9.7 Invigilation/proctoring

Since 2020 Unisa conducts all its assessments online. Given stringent requirements from
professional bodies and increased solicitations of Unisa’s students by third parties to unlawfully
assist them with the completion of assignments and examinations, the University is obliged to
assure its assessment integrity through the utilisation of various proctoring tools: Turnitin,
Moodle Proctoring, the Invigilator App and IRIS. These tools will authenticate the student’s
identity and flag suspicious behaviour to assure credibility of students’ responses during
assessments. The description below is for your benefit as you may encounter any or all of these
in your registered modules:

Turnitin is a plagiarism software that facilitates checks for originality in students’ submissions
against internal and external sources. Turnitin assists in identifying academic fraud and ghost
writing. Students are expected to submit typed responses for utilisation of the Turnitin software.

The Moodle Proctoring tool is a facial recognition software that authenticates students’ identity
during their Quiz assessments. This tool requires access to a student’s mobile or laptop
camera. Students must ensure their camera is activated in their browser settings prior to their
assessments.

The Invigilator “mobile application-based service does verification” of the identity of an

assessment participant. The Invigilator Mobile Application detects student dishonesty-by-proxy
and ensures that the assessment participant is the registered student. This invigilation tool
requires students to download the app from their Play Store (Google, Huawei and Apple) on
their mobile devices (camera enabled) prior to their assessment.

IRIS Invigilation software verifies the identity of a student during assessment and provides for
both manual and automated facial verification. It has the ability to record and review a student’s
assessment session. It flags suspicious behaviour by the students for review by an academic
administrator. IRIS software requires installation on students’ laptop devices that are enabled
with a webcam.

Students who are identified and flagged for suspicious dishonest behaviour arising from the
invigilation and proctoring reports are referred to the disciplinary office for formal proceeding.

Please note:

Students must refer to their module assessment information on their myModule sites to
determine which proctoring or invigilation tool will be utilised for their formative and summative
assessments.

12
Other assessment methods

The Study @ Unisa brochure contains important information on the final-year concession
procedure to assist students with one or two modules outstanding. The Department of
Examination Administration (DEA) will inform all students who qualify for a final-year (FI)
concession by SMS or e-mail.
Self-assessment

In this module, you will be in charge of your own progress. That means you will have to work on
a regular basis. I will give you all the support I can, but it is ultimately up to you to decide how
you will master the required skills.

In order to master the outcomes for this module, you should plan your learning experience
strategically. When planning your studies, bear in mind that your preparation for the
examination should start today. By the time you write the examination, you will be well prepared
for it if you have completed all the activities in the module online as well as all the assignments
in Tutorial Letter 101.

Distance learning demands self-assessment

Through self-assessment students increasingly take responsibility for their own education and
completing and marking an assignment serves as a learning experience. There is clear
evidence that self-assessment enriches the learning experience. This is especially true in the
case of distance education. Research has shown that the ability to evaluate your own work is a
key element of any type of learning and is an ability that must be cultivated if you wish to
engage effectively in lifelong learning.

Self-assessment will become easier as you progress as a student. We know from experience
that as a student’s learning experience is enriched through self-assessment; the pass (success)
rate rises accordingly.

Methods and levels of evaluation

Self-assessment has various dimensions because of its overall complexity. For instance, there
are various levels and methods of evaluation. Examples of evaluation levels are knowledge,
insight, application, analysis and synthesis. Learning objectives should be described in terms of
one or more of these assessment levels. You can apply the following principles when assessing
your assignment answer:

• Make sure that you know the purpose of the assessment. For example, does it test your
knowledge of a concept or does it assess your ability to apply your knowledge to a specific
situation?
• Determine the criteria for evaluating the achievement. For example, do you have to show
your calculations? Will you receive extra marks for citing relevant examples from your own
workplace?
• Compare your answer with the model answer. Be critical when you do this. Look where you
can improve and see if you interpreted the concept the same way as the lecturer did.
• After you have assessed your answer, rewrite it and reflect on the following:

13
o What have I learnt from doing the assignment?
o What knowledge and skills have I acquired in the process?
o Which of these skills will I be able to apply in my work situation?

9.8 The examination

Alternative methods of assessment are available for students who qualify for final year (FI)
concessions. The Study @ Unisa brochure contains important information on the final year
concession procedure for students who have one or two outstanding modules. The Department
of Examination Administration (DEA) will inform students if they qualify for an FI concession by
SMS/e-mail.

For this module, FI students have the option to be referred to the next formal examination
opportunity or to engage in an alternative method of assessment. The alternative method of
assessment for this module is an examination comprising a full multiple-choice question paper.
More information on the alternative method of assessment will be communicated directly to the
qualifying students.

Alternative methods of assessment are subject to stringent academic rules and processes and
should not be considered an easier option. Failure to meet the learning outcomes of the module
through the alternative method of assessment will result in a fail, and you will need to re-register
for the outstanding module.

10. ACADEMIC DISHONESTY

10.1 Plagiarism
Plagiarism is the act of taking the words, ideas and thoughts of others and presenting them as
your own. It is a form of theft. Plagiarism includes the following forms of academic dishonesty:

• Copying and pasting from any source without acknowledging the source.
• Not including references or deliberately inserting incorrect bibliographic information.
• Paraphrasing without acknowledging the original source of the information.
10.2 Cheating
Cheating includes, but is not limited to, the following:

• Completing assessments on behalf of another student, copying the work of another

student during an assessment, or allowing another student to copy your work.
• Using social media (e.g. WhatsApp, Telegram) or other platforms to disseminate
assessment information.
• Submitting corrupt or irrelevant files as per examination guidelines
14
• Buying completed answers from so-called “tutors” or internet sites (contract cheating).

https://www.unisa.ac.za/sites/myunisa/default/Study-@-Unisa/Student-values-and-rules

11. STUDENTS LIVING WITH DISABILITIES

The Advocacy and Resource Centre for Students with Disabilities (ARCSWiD) provides an
opportunity for staff to interact with first-time and returning students with disabilities.
If you are a student with a disability and would like additional support or need additional time for
assessments, you are invited to contact (name and e-mail address of the lecturer must be
inserted) to discuss the assistance that you need.
