CRITICAL LISTENING

Wearing or using a cellphone in class means students bring
and sometimes use their phones during lessons. Some schools allow
it, some do not. This topic has both advantages and
disadvantages, and people have different opinions about it.
I believe that cellphones should be allowed in class, but
only for educational purposes and with strict rules.
Why?
• Helpful for Learning
Phones can be used to search for information, use dictionaries, take
notes, and join learning apps like Google Classroom or Kahoot.
• Emergency Communication
If something urgent happens, students can quickly contact their
parents or guardians.
• Learning Tools
Phones have calculators, cameras, and other useful tools that can
help with schoolwork.
BUT…
Phones can also cause problems if students use them for games,
social media, or cheating. That’s why teachers must set clear
rules—like “phones only during group activities or research” and “no
phones during exams.”
Rules wearing phone in class
• Phones must be on silent mode during class.
• Only use phones when the teacher gives permission.
• No social media or games during lessons.
• No phones during exams or quizzes.
• No recording or taking pictures without teacher approval.
• If a student breaks the rule, the teacher can take the phone.
• Phones are only for learning, not chatting or entertainment.
Based on my personal experience, using a cellphone can be very
helpful for learning, especially when used wisely. One example is
when I use my phone to listen to English podcasts. This activity is
very useful for improving my listening skills because I can hear real
conversations from native speakers anytime and anywhere. I can
also repeat the parts that are difficult to understand until I really get
them. In this way, learning becomes more flexible and interesting.
Therefore, I believe that cellphones should not be completely
banned in class, but their use should be regulated to keep the focus
on education.
