today’s world?
Section 3: Reading Comprehension
Estimated Time: 20 minutes
Read the following passage and answer the questions below.
The Amazon Rainforest, often referred to as the "lungs of the planet," plays
a crucial role in maintaining the Earth's ecosystem.
Covering over 5.5 million square kilometers, it is the largest tropical
rainforest in the world and is home to an estimated 400 billion individual
trees, representing 16,000 species.
The forest is vital for absorbing carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, and
producing oxygen. Additionally, it regulates the global climate and supports
millions of species, including humans who rely on its resources.
In recent years, however, deforestation and human activities have threatened
the survival of this ecosystem. Large areas of the forest are being cleared for
agriculture, logging, and mining.
Scientists warn that continued destruction could lead to a tipping point,
where the rainforest can no longer sustain itself, potentially transforming
into a savanna-like ecosystem. This shift would have severe consequences
for biodiversity and the global climate, as it would release vast amounts of
stored carbon into the atmosphere.
Efforts to protect the Amazon are ongoing, but they face challenges from
economic pressures and illegal activities. Nevertheless, environmental
groups and governments are working together to promote sustainable
development and conservation in the region.
