Pr. Lab Tech 2

Phlebotomy is the process of drawing blood for analysis or treatment, involving techniques such as venipuncture, capillary sampling, and arterial sampling. The document outlines the composition of blood, the necessary apparatus for venipuncture, and detailed procedural steps for safely collecting blood from a vein. Proper patient positioning, site selection, and hygiene practices are emphasized to ensure effective blood collection.

Phlebotomy
is the act of drawing or removing blood
from the circulatory system through a cut
(incision) or puncture in order to obtain a
sample for analysis and diagnosis.
Phlebotomy is also done as part of the
patient's treatment for certain blood
disorders.
• Blood is a body fluid in the circulatory system
of humans and other vertebrates that delivers
necessary substances such as nutrients and
oxygen to the cells and transports metabolic
waste products away from those same cells.

Type of blood collection
1. Venipuncture Sampling
2. Capillary sampling OR Finger prick
3. Arterial Sampling
Venipuncture Sampling

Venipuncture is the collection of blood from a vein which is usually

done for laboratory testing. The blood is normally drawn from a vein on
the top of the hand or from the inside of the elbow.

When require large amount of blood using vein puncture.

Apparatus:
• Needle or syringe
• Tourniquet
• Cotton
• Disinfectant agent with (ethanol, isopropyl alcohol)
• Adhesive bandages
• Sharps container
Procedure
• Position the patient. The patient should sit in a chair, lie down, or sit
up in bed. Hyperextend the patient’s arm.
• Examine the antecubital area of the arm and choose a prominent
vein. The median cubital vein, located in the antecubital fossa, is
generally the vein of choice.
• Apply the tourniquet 3–4 inches above the selected puncture site. Do
not place too tightly or leave on more than 2 minutes.
• The patient should make a fist without pumping the hand.
• Select the venipuncture site by palpating the area of arm vein
location.
• Prepare the patient’s arm using an alcohol wipe. Cleanse in a
circular fashion, beginning at the site and working outward.
Allow to air dry.

• Grasp the patient’s arm firmly using your thumb to draw the
skin taut and anchor the vein. The needle should form a 15–30
degree angle with the surface of the arm and should enter the
skin with the bevel facing upward.

• Swiftly, but gently, insert the needle through the skin and into
the lumen of the vein. And the collect the blood .

• After collection insert the needle out and put cotton or bandage
in to the collection site.
