Wind Energy Concept – Test - Solution

1. Power Extracted by the turbine of wind energy conversion system is directly

proportional to
(V – Velocity of the wind)
1 1
𝐴) 𝑉 2 𝐵) 𝑉 3 C) 𝑉 2 𝐷) 𝑉 3
TNPSC -2024
Solution:

1 1
 Kinetic energy of wind turbine 𝐾𝐸 = 𝜌𝐴(𝑉1 − 𝑉2 )3 𝑡 = 2 𝜌𝐴𝑉𝑑 3 𝑡
2
 Change of velocity of air Vd = upstream Velocity – downstream velocity
𝑉𝑑 = 𝑉1 − 𝑉2
 Power Extracted by the turbine of wind energy conversion system is directly
proportional to 𝑉 3
Ans: 𝑩) 𝑽𝟑

2. In a wind turbine the radius of the rotor is 3 metre has 24 blades, each 0.35 m
wide, the solidity is
A) 54.6% B) 34.6% C) 64.6% D) 89%
TNPSC 2024-Oct
Solution:
 Solidity is ratio of area of the total rotor blades to the area of the rotor disk.
 Area of total blades = Number of blades x blade width x radius
= 24 x 3 x 0.35 = 25.2 m2
 Swept area = area of rotor disk = 𝜋𝑟 2 = 𝜋 × 32 = 28.27 𝑚2
 Solidity = 25.2/28.27 = 0.89 = 89%
Ans: D) 89%

3. The cut in and cut out speeds of wind turbine ranges between
A) 3 m/s and 25 m/s respectively
B) 10 m/s and 35 m/s respectively
C) Less than 10 m/s respectively
D) 3 m/s and 12 m/s respectively
TNMWSB-2024
Solution:
 The "cut-off speed" or "cut-in speed" : speed of a wind turbine refers to the
minimum wind speed required for the turbine to start generating electricity.
Minimum Cut-in speed in the range of 2.5m/s to 5 m/s.
NCM LEARNING CENTER

 The cut-out speed : is the point at which the turbine must be shut down to
avoid damage to the equipment. Cut –out speed of wind turbine ranges from
25m/s to 40 m/s

Ans: A) 3 m/s and 25 m/s respectively

4. The wind intensity can be described by

A) Reynolds Number B) Mach Number
C) Froude Number D) Beaufort Number
TNPSC 2022
Solution:
 Wind intensity can be described by beaufort number.
Ans: D) Beaufort Number

5. Savonius rotor is associated with

A) Tidal energy
B) Geothermal energy
C) Wind turbine with vertical axis
D) Wind energy with horizontal axis
TNPSC 2019
Solution:
 There are 2 types of vertical axis wind turbines:
1. Savonius model
2. Darrieus model
Ans: C) Wind turbine with vertical axis

6. What is Betz limit ? for a wind turbine

A) 5.93% B) 59.3%
C) 60.9% D) 55.5%
TNPSC 2019
Solution:
The Betz limit: is the theoretical maximum efficiency for a wind turbine,
conjectured by German physicist Albert Betz in 1919. Betz concluded that this value
is 59.3%, meaning that at most only 59.3% of the kinetic energy from wind can be
used to spin the turbine and generate electricity

7. At gradient height the shear force is

A) Minimum B) Zero
C) One D) Maximum
TNPSC 2022
Solution:
NCM LEARNING CENTER

 The height above ground where surface friction has a negligible effect on
wind speed is called the gradient height. For example, typical values for
the predicted gradient height are 457 m for large cities, 366 m for
suburbs, 274 m for open terrain, and 213 m for open sea. Due to the
negligible surface friction at gradient height, shear force is zero
Ans: B) Zero

8. Which of the following machine is suitable for a variable speed wind turbine
machine?
A) Doubly fed induction Machine
B) DC shunt Machine
C) Squirrel Cage Induction Machine
D) DC Series Machine
TNMWSB-2024
Solution:
 Doubly Fed Induction Generators (DFIGs) are widely used in variable
speed wind turbines due to their ability to control the rotor speed and
maximize energy capture. They can operate over a range of speeds,
making them suitable for variable wind conditions.
Ans: A) Doubly fed induction Machine

9. Wind speed is 10m/s at the standard atmospheric pressure and air density is 1.226
J/kg – k/m3. Find the total power density in Wind stream
A) 800 W/m2 B) 700 W/m2
C) 613 W/m2 D) 713 W/m2
TNPSC 2024-Oct
Solution:
1
 Power Density (P) = 2 × Air Density (ρ) × Wind Speed^3
1
P= × 1.226 × 103 = 613 W/m3
2

10. Power of an air mass flows in wind power generation does not depend upon
A) Air density B) Wind speed
C) Area in which air passes D) Moisture present in air
TNPSC -2024
Solution:
1
 Kinetic energy of wind turbine 𝐾𝐸 = 2 𝜌𝐴(𝑉1 − 𝑉2 )3 𝑡
 Power of wind depends upon air density (𝜌), Area in which air passes and
wind speed
Ans: D) Moisture present in air
