TEXT: Benefits of sport
Sport plays an important role in human beings’ lives. It is therefore necessary to inculcate a sportive
habit in children when they are still students. In Togo, schools promote sports through physical
education classes and school competitions. Physical education classes are often held on the school field
or playground. Students are trained in disciplines such as climbing, running, throwing weights,
performing long jumps and high jumps. Physical education classes are compulsory except in case of
disability or serious sickness. Students take tests and their performances are marked. During school
competitions, students play games such as football, volleyball, handball and running. Sometimes, they
play Ampé or jump ropes as well. These sports have positive impacts on students. They enable them to
compete and work as a team. Students also improve their fitness and health. Through these
competitions, some students could discover their talents and become professional athletes, perform in
international competitions, and have successful careers.
