IN GEC 105 – PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION

I. Course Code: GEC 105

II. Course Title: Purposive Communication

III. Unit Credit: 3 units

IV. Time Allotment: 3 lecture hours per week for 16 weeks (48 hours)

V. Pre-requisites: none

VI. Calendar Year / Semester Offered: 2ND SEM., AY 2022-2023

VII. Course Description:

Purposive Communication is about writing, speaking, and presenting to different audiences


and for various purposes
(CMO 20 s. 2013).

Purposive Communication is a three-unit course that develops students’ communicative


competencies and enhances their cultural and intercultural awareness through multimodal tasks
that provide them opportunities for communicating effectively and appropriately to a
multicultural audience in a local or global context. It equips students with tools for critical
evaluation of a variety of texts and focuses on the power of language and the impact of images
to emphasize the importance of conveying messages responsibly. The knowledge, skills, and
insights that students gain from this course may be used in their other academic endeavors,
their chosen disciplines, and their future careers as they compose and produce relevant oral,
written, audio-visual and web-based output for various purposes.

VIII. Course Objectives:

The general objectives of the course, as encapsulated are the following:

1. Develop students’ communicative competence;


2. Enhance the cultural and intercultural awareness of the students; and
3. Equip students with the tools for critical evaluation.

XII Course Policies / Requirements:

ATTENDANCE POLICY: Regular attendance is expected. Attendance and preparation are


absolute requirements for your success in this course. Absences and tardiness are the student’s
responsibility. Students, therefore, are expected to attend every class and to arrive at each class
on time and remain on class for the entire class period. Tardiness or leaving class early is NOT
appreciated. It disrupts those students trying to learn. If you are going to stop attending class,
notify the instructor of your intentions and be sure to attend to details and drop the course
properly.

N.B. Three consecutive absences with no valid reasons – DROPPED! (Instructor’s DISCRETION.

PERFECT ATTENDANCE - 100


1 Absence with NO valid reason (s) - 95
2 Absences with NO valid reason (s) - 90
3 Absences with NO valid reason (s) - 85
4 – 5 Absences with NO valid reason (s) - 80
6 – up - WARNING!

ASSIGNMENT POLICY: Students are expected to work with the required assignments. All
assignments are to be completed by the following class meeting and it should be submitted
personally. Assignments will be collected, examined, checked and recorded at any time. They
should be viewed as a “suggested practice”. Working on assignments inside the class is HIGHLY
DISCOURAGED.

HONESTY POLICY: Honesty is expected on all requirements. Dishonesty (cheating, plagiarism,


sharing information.) is highly discouraged.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS:

Students are expected to complete all academic requirements.


SPECIAL QUIZZES / EXAMINATIONS are given only to those students who failed to take the
scheduled quizzes / examinations for VALID reasons only. Student will be given for only three
(3) school days to comply in a scheduled basis. Prepare immediately the supporting documents
(excuse letter, medical certificate). After the allotted days, student will no
longer be entertained.

NOTE: Students are highly encouraged to complete the periodical examinations to


ensure a greater probability of passing the course. Although, there is an equivalent grade of 50
for not taking the examination but should limit only one (1) periodical examination.

OTHER(S)

• Mutual respect is very important for learning. You will be verbally warned once for
disrupting classes. If you continue disrupting classes, you will be asked to leave permanently.
• CELLULAR PHONES should be OFF or must be set in a silent mode, NO CHARGING OF
CELLULAR PHONES, and NO TEXTING during class hour(s).

• Students are expected to participate actively during class hour.

• Completion of required periodical examinations, quizzes and do library / internet research.

XIII Grading System:

In every grading period:

PERIODICAL EXAMINATIONS/ QUIZZES - 40%

CLASS STANDING/RECITATION - 20%

WRITTEN OUTPUTS/ACTIVITIES - 30%

ATTENDANCE - 10%

100%

Formula for Converting Raw Score to Grade

(Raw Score ÷ Total Raw Score) X 50 + 50

e.g. 65 (RS) ÷ 90 (TRS) X 50 + 50 = 86.11

Note: Student’s grade depends entirely on their test/periodical examination performance.


Students, therefore, are expected to do their best in every evaluation.
