CV vs Portfolio

Although you may have a broad understanding of

what the differences are between a resume and a
portfolio, it may be helpful to glance through a
short comparison such as:

Purpose

The purpose of a CV is to get hiring managers to notice you and

invite you for a first interview. Once you have an interview, you
can provide hiring managers with a portfolio so they can gain a
more in-depth understanding of the work you do and what you
offer.

Format

A resume is a short and brief document in which you describe

your relevant qualifications, work experience and writing skills. In
contrast, a portfolio contains a wide variety of content, which can
include videos, web pages, photographs, illustrations, graphs and
more. Since it contains samples of your work and in-depth
information regarding your professional abilities, a portfolio can
become quite extensive and usually takes time to put together

Requirements

Whereas employers typically require a resume for every job

application, a portfolio is not always relevant. Although a wide
scope of individuals outside of the creative industries are
increasingly using portfolios to showcase their abilities, certain
careers may not be a good fit for this format, such as
academician, filmmaker, designers and so on.

Whether you want to promote your skills,

experiences or a combination of two or else you
just want simply to make an effect – there is a
resume for every position.

Those FOUR main types are:-

Ø Chronological resume

Ø Functional resume

Ø Combination resume

Ø Infographic resume

Prepared By: RAAJEISH 5

Ø Chronological resume
A chronological
resume starts by
listing your work
history, with the most
recent position listed
first.
Base your most
recent job, you list
your other jobs in
reverse chronological
order.
Note
Employers typically
prefer this type of
resume because it's
easy to see what jobs
you have held and
when you have
worked at them. This
is the most common
resume type.

This type of resume works well for job seekers with a strong,
solid work history. If you are starting your career, or if you are
changing career fields, you might consider a different resume
type.

Prepared By: RAAJEISH 6

Ø Functional resume
A functional resume
focuses on your skills
and experience,
rather than on
your chronological
work history.1 Instead
of having a “work
history” section at the
top of your resume,
you might have a
“skilled experience”
or “accomplishments”
section that lists
various skills you have
developed over the
years.
This resumes are used
most often by people
who are changing
careers or who have
gaps in their work
history.

Note
By highlighting skills rather than work history, you can
emphasize how you are qualified for the job.

Prepared By: RAAJEISH 7

Ø Combination resume
A combination, or
hybrid, resume is a
mix between a
chronological resume
and a functional
resume.1 At the top
of the resume is a list
of one’s skills and
qualifications. Below
this is one’s
chronological work
history. However, the
work history is not the
focus of the resume
and typically does not
take up much space
on the resume.
Highlight the skills
you have that are
relevant to the job
you are applying for,
as well as provide
your chronological
work history.
Note
This kind of resume helps you highlight what makes you the
best fit for the job, while still giving the employer all the
information he or she wants.

Ø Infographic / Hyperlink resume
Infographic resumes
include graphic design
elements in addition
to or instead of text.
An infographic resume
uses layout, color,
design, formatting,
icons, and font styling
to organize content

to represent your resume’s “data,” so you will need to do more
than just use a hip font and place your text on a colored

Portfolio

A portfolio is a collection of material and

information that provides visual examples of the
work you've done in a professional field. Providing
a hiring company or prospective client with
samples of the best work you've done is an
effective way to show the skills and abilities you
possess. Instead of reading about your abilities,
hiring managers or clients get to see real-life
examples of the work you do, which is useful for
evaluating whether you'd be a good fit for the
company and the position.

A portfolio typically may include different content,

such as photographs, videos, illustrations, website
links and text. Although a wide range of candidates
use portfolios, they especially provide creative and
artistic candidates with a means to showcase their
work. Individuals who commonly use portfolios
include artists, photographers, designers, writers,
architects and developers.

Applying for JOBS
Here are the 6 Easy and Effective Steps:

What is a job application?

A job application is a formal document that sums

up your factual education and experience for your
potential employer. It contains confidential
candidate information for both recruiters and
hiring personnel to review.

You may find that when you go online to submit

your resume to a company, you're also asked to fill
out a digital application. Other times, companies
will ask you to come in and fill out an application
by hand, often during the interview or onboarding
process. Unlike your resume, your job application is
a legally-defendable document.

How To Apply for JOBS
Here's how you can apply for a job that helps you
achieve your career goals:

• Search for jobs in your field

• Research hiring companies

• Ready your resume for submission

• Decide if a cover letter is right for you

• Submit your resume and online application

• Application follow-up

Prepared By: RAAJEISH 20

How To Apply for JOBS
• Search for jobs in your field
After 2020 pandemic, people uses the internet as a
primary means of locating jobs. Websites like
LinkedIn, Indeed, Jobstreet and other platforms
make it easier to connect with employers who are
looking for your skills and experience.

• Research hiring companies

A strong starting point is to go online to the
company's "about" page. You should also perform
a search query on the company name to look for
any news, current events or even reviews about the
company. Once you've exhausted your internet
search, move on to connecting with people who
work at the companies you are applying to. By
networking with people who work at companies
you are considering working for, you get a better
feel for overall company culture.

• Ready your resume for submission

First, keeping it up-to-date means adding your
most recent education, experience and skills. In a
chronological resume, most recent education and
experience should be listed first in each section.
You can optimize your resume for the job you are
applying to by reviewing the job description and
using relevant keywords that apply to your skillset
through your resume.

How To Apply for JOBS
• Decide if a cover letter is right for you
In modern job applications, a cover letter is not
always expected. Decide if you need to submit a
cover letter. Sometimes you can tell because it will
say so on the application. However, if you do opt
to include a cover letter, make sure that it accents
your resume and tells an interesting story about
you.

• Submit resume and online application

After preparing your resume and cover letter, you
may need to go online and fill out an application
where you can attach your external documents.
Avoid copying and pasting directly from your
resume into the online application because that can
lead to formatting issues.

• Application follow-up
Hiring managers may need time to sort through
resumes and applications. While you may be
tempted to follow up soon after applying, wait
about two weeks before reaching out to check the
status of your application. This gives hiring
managers adequate time to sort through
candidates and makes you look more professional.
You can call the company and ask to speak to the
hiring manager for the position for a follow-up.

Tips for applicants

Before you apply for a job, follow these tips to

better prepare yourself for the application:

• Review social media. First, review your social

media. Make sure your privacy settings are set
how you want them and that anything visible to
the public is appropriately professional.

• Locate hiring managers online. Using business

social media sites and professional networks,
you can connect with hiring managers at the
companies you are interested in. This will allow
you to connect with managers, personalize your
communications and stand out as a candidate.

• Connect with employees. Connect with other

employees at the company to learn what it's like
to work there, what kinds of things they look for
in an employee and the overall culture of the
business.

Internships & Interviews
What is an internship?

An internship is an opportunity for students, recent

graduates or other individuals to gain industry
experience and test out roles on a trial basis.

Internships can be beneficial for a variety of

reasons. The experience often expands your skill
set and provides you with knowledge about an
industry. After graduation, internship experience
on your resume can set you apart from other job
applicants. The company you interned with may
even offer you a job if you performed well during
your ‘intern’ time with them.

What to expect during an internship

interview?

When you arrive for an internship interview, you

may feel a little nervous. Knowing what to expect
can help you feel confident in the room.
When you meet the interviewer, it is common to
shake hands and exchange pleasantries before
sitting down for a one-on-one conversation.

these frequently asked questions, and think about
how you would best answer them. Preparation can
help you feel confident and seem informed,
interested and professional.

Can you tell me about yourself?

This is usually the opening line of an interview.

Consider providing a summary of your background
and focus on your academic and professional
experiences or interests.

This question gives you a chance to let them know

what you’ve learned so far and how you could
apply it to the job. You can also include details
about your extracurricular activities, leadership
positions, volunteer roles and more.

Common internship interview questions.

Why do you want an internship with this company?

Your answer to this question will be an indicator of

how well you have prepared. This is also an
opportunity for you to demonstrate why you are a
good fit for the position, so be specific in your
answer.

Reasons for wanting to work with their company

could include the company’s reputation,
achievements or culture.

You may also consider speaking about how this

internship would help you get closer to your
professional / career goals.

Common internship interview questions.

What makes you a good candidate for this

internship?
This question is your chance to address your
academic and professional background, as well as
other attributes or experiences that your resume
may not communicate. Include specifics about your
skillset and how it matches the internship
requirements. These skills could come from the
c l a s s ro o m , v o l u n t e e r o r p a r t - t i m e w o r k
experiences.

How does this internship relate to your career

goals?
The answer to this question allows your interviewer
to understand your ambitions. If you haven’t
developed a plan, focus on the skills you want to
gain, the job role you would like to fulfill and any
related goals you want to accomplish in the near
future.
