Case Study: Troubleshooting Network Cabling Issues

1. Identify Possible Causes

• Physical Damaged Cables – cables can be damaged while installing them or any time after
the installation. If care is not taken to place cables in safe areas that have proper protection it
might results them to be damaged by being stepped on or furniture placed on them.

• Lack of cable management – So when cables are twisted, it may reduce the airflow around
the equipment. This may result to overheating and it will reduce the performance and lead
to disconnection to other users, also maintenance work becomes more challenging when are
cables are not organised well. It might be also hard to label them while they are not
organized or properly placed.

• TIA/EIA-568 Structured Cabling Standards – If the cabling standards are not well crimped or
the colours were not mixed with different colours it might cause other users to be
disconnected from the internet regularly. Make sure you use the right tool when coming in
contact with these kinds of standards the tools that are required here are RJ45 connector
and a crimping tool.
2. Troubleshooting Steps

• After Inspection, He should avoid running network near power cables to reduce disturbance.
Keep network cables to in contact with people. Organize cables by grouping them according
to their cabling standards instead of letting hang around.

• After crimping the cables, he should use a network tester tool so that he can know that he
did proper configurations or so that he can spot miswiring or faulty connections before doing
the full installation, if any issues are found he should replace the faulty cables.

• Once you’ve performed your solution, be sure to test the network. Also be on the lookout for
other problems that might have been caused by the changes you’ve made to the network.
Make sure that you check network connectivity once a week so that you can keep the
network running smoothly.
2.2 Packet Tracer Simulation

In the Packet Tracer simulation, we are simulating the setup with a PC, laptop, router, modem, server,
and cloud internet. The structed network topoly it fails network test connection between the
devices connect due to lack of cabling and which may be a wrong cable is conncetd which leads to
network disconnections.

To resolve the issue the router need to know about its own connectd networks, we should try
changing the cable with a different cable that connect the router and the switch which may change
the red labels on the network topology and later on try to ping the router to see if the connection of
the network topology is connceted successfully which the labels will change to greeen.
3. Resolution and Documentation

We used Packet to analyze traffic on the network so that we can figure out any problems in the
network. Working with network cables it’s safe that this will not be the last time you come across this
issue, make sure to document each step of troubleshooting the problem because this will be helpful
to someone who will be diagnosing the same problem in future and it will help them to shorten
network downtime in the company.

This means you need to keep track of cable connections, also need to organize your cables neatly
and securely. Documentation can help you to avoid cable damage, mismatch and make your cable
troubleshooting easier and much faster. You will need to plan your cable installation carefully ,
considering your environment also.
