Module 1: Rectilinear Translation

Dynamics – the branch of mechanics which deals with the study of bodies in motion.
The subject of dynamics will be presented in two parts:
[Link], which treats only the geometric aspects of the motion, and
[Link], which is the analysis of the forces causing the motion.

Lesson1 Rectilinear motion with Constant Acceleration

Intended Learning Outcomes
After studying this lesson, the learner shall be able to;
1. solved problems involving rectilinear motion with constant acceleration
2. find the different quantities such as time, velocity, acceleration, etc. of particles in rectilinear motion
with constant acceleration.

Rectilinear Motion is a type of motion in which the body moves in a straight line or is moving in the
direction parallel to its displacement
Uniform Motion: A motion with constant speed or velocity.
Uniform Acceleration: A motion with constant change in velocity or of uniform acceleration.

Applicable formulas for solving problems involving rectilinear motion with constant acceleration:

(1) s  vt
(2) at  v2  v1
(3) 2as  v2 2  v12
(4) s  v1t  12 at 2

a = acceleration v1 = initial speed

t = time v2 = final speed
s = distance
v = speed
t = time

Illustrative Examples:

1. On a certain stretch of track, trains run at 96.56 kph . How far back of a stopped train should be a
warning torpedo be placed to signal an oncoming train? Assume that the brakes are applied at once
and retard the train at the uniform rate of 2 ft/sec2 (0.6

Solution:
Initial velocity
V1 = 96.56 kph = 96.56 km/hr = [99.56(1000)m] / [(3600sec)]
V1= 26.82 m/sec

V22 = v12 + 2 a s
02 = 26.822 − 2 (0.61) s
s = 589.7 m answer

Formative assessments:

1. A train moving with constant acceleration travels 24 ft during the 10th sec of its motion and 18 ft.
during the 12th sec of its motion. Find its initial velocity and its constant acceleration.

2. A train moving with constant acceleration travels 7 m during the 9th sec of its motion and 5.5 m
during the 10th sec of its motion. Find its initial velocity and its constant acceleration.

3. Two cars A and B have a velocity of 60 mph in the same direction. A is 250 ft behind B when the
brakes are applied to car B, causing it to decelerate at the constant rate of 10 ft per sec2. In what
time will A overtake B, and how far will each car have traveled?
4. An automobile moving at a constant velocity of 45 ft per sec passes a gasoline station. Two seconds
later, another automobile leaves the gasoline station and accelerates at the constant rate of 6 ft
per sec2. How soon will the second automobile overtake the first?

5. An automobile starting from rest speeds up to 40 ft per sec with a constant acceleration of 4 ft per
sec2, runs at this speed for a time, and finally comes to rest with a deceleration of 5 ft per sec2. If
the total distance traveled is 1000 ft, find the total time required.
