一、Purpose

Standard for galvanized steel product inspection.

二、Scope

It covers the inspection specification of pre-galvanized steel plate and strip (0.3~6.0mm

thickness), and hot-dip galvanized part (hereinafter galvanized product).

三、Appearance inspection

3.1 Condition: The acceptance inspection of all the HDG part shall under normal reading

environment from a distance of not less than 1m by normal or corrected vision.

3.2 Appearance inspection of steel plate and steel strip: No uncoated area, coating peeling

off, visible crack or other defects (if either can affect the intended use). Small zinc layer

cracks and white edges are allowed at the edge of the unedged steel strip.

3.3 Appearance inspection of galvanized part: The significant surface of all galvanized part,

when examined by visual, shall free from zinc nodules and zinc ash (if either can affect the

intended use or cause corrosion), blisters, uncoated area, solvent slag, rough and sharp

points (if either can cause injure). If the thickness of the coating is greater than the

specified value, dark or light gray areas of uneven color are allowed on the surface of the

galvanized part.

The appearance of the coating affected by the use of discontinuous welding in

overlapping surface welding (e.g. weld penetration) shall not be considered as a reason

for rejection.

Defects does not include traces of corrosion/oxidation which might be visible on the cut

and stamped faces on the part fabricated by using material of pre-galvanized coated,

Aluminum-zinc alloy-coated and Zinc-aluminum-magnesium alloy-coated, since there is

no extra treatment for the cut and stamped faces, such occurrences are considered

normal and will not compromise structural strength and functionality.

Galvanized fastener and washer: No uncoated area, droplet nodules, dark spot, residual

solvent slag or oxidized inclusion (if either can affect the intended use), a dull appearance

is acceptable.

四、Zinc coating thickness measurement

4.1 Continuously galvanized steel strip (pre-galvanized steel strip) and part made by

pre-galvanized material shall evaluate coating mass by weighing method. Due to the

limitations of the operation site, in order to realize the on-site inspection of the

pre-galvanized parts, the coating mass is changed to the film thickness measurement. In

case of disputes between the supply and the demand, the weighing method shall be

adopted for arbitration in accordance with ISO1460 or equivalent code.

4.2 Measurement method:

Pre-galvanized steel plate and strip: sampled 3 in a group, each sampling size shall not

less than 5000mm2, sampling location is as pic.1 below. Magnetic coating thickness

method is applied. Each sample is used for local coating thickness measurement by the

average value of 5 points measurement values. The average value of these 3 samples is

the mean coating thickness.

If the reference area of pre-galvanized steel plate or strip is less than 5000mm2, refer to

sub-clause 4.2.3.

For equivalent double-sided coated material, at least 3 in a group measuring area for two

sides, and for nonequivalent double-sided coated material, at least 3 in a group measuring

area for each side.

Pic.1

4.2.1 Coating mass specification:

The coating mass specification shall refer to drawing and/or technical specification, and

measuring by magnetic thickness method with converted thickness value. The gravimetric

test shall be adopted for arbitration.

Coating mass and coating thickness conversion formula:

Single-sided coating thickness( μ m)=single-sided coating mass(g/ ㎡ )/7.2, such as

equivalent double-sided coating mass 550g/m² to coating thickness conversion formula,

550(g/㎡))/2/7.2(g/cm3)=38.19μm。

Coating thickness measurement of HDG part:

The coating thickness of HDG part would be test by magnetic test.

4.2.5 Measuring method

Film gauge shall be calibrated by standard non-magnetic films before measuring. No foreign

matters (such as ash, grease, corrosion products) shall cover the measuring area, clear the

measuring areas without damaging coating, and keep off the area with flaws such as flowing line ,

zinc nodules, zinc spines, welding spatter, rough, concave and convex and other appearance

phenomena that affect the determination of normal coating thickness.

4.2.6 Sampling position:

If the part size is adequate, the coating thickness should be measured in the center and more

than 10mm away from edge, cutting surface, hole, welding line, inner angle and outer angle. The

quantity, location and size of reference area should refer to part shape and size accordingly. For

the long size part, the reference area should be selected about 100mm away from ends and

centered, it should cover the whole cross section. The probe must be perpendicular to the profile

surface when measuring, as the pic. 2 below.

五、Acceptance standard

5.1 Coating thickness should be compliant with drawing and/or related technical

specification. If there is no local coating thickness requirement on the drawing or relevant

technical requirements, and it needs to be considered according to production quality

control or other special requirements, the following criteria can be referred to.

Type/spec. Local coating thickness X/μm Remark

Mounting — — —
X≥65μm X=X-15 X: mean coating thickness
structure
— —
X<65μm X=X-10

fastener — —
X≥50μm X=X-10

— —
X<50μm X=X-5

5.2 All inspection and/or test must be completed before materials are warehoused and

products are shipped, and each batch of incoming materials shall be attached with quality

inspection report, out-going inspection report shall be attached accordingly when

shipped.

5.3 If the thickness of coating on a control sample does not conform to these requirements,

twice the original number of parts (or all the parts if that is the lesser number) shall be

taken from the lot and tested. If this larger control sample passes, the whole inspection

lot shall be accepted. If the larger control sample does not pass, the parts that do not

conform to the requirements shall either be discarded or the purchaser may authorize

them to be re-galvanized.

六、Renovation

The total uncoated areas for renovation by the galvanizer shall not exceed 0,5 % of the

total surface area of the component. Each uncoated area for renovation shall not exceed

10 cm2. Renovation shall be by a suitable zinc-rich paint where the zinc dust pigment 95%

or more. If uncoated areas are larger, the part containing such areas shall be

re-galvanized, unless otherwise agreed between the purchaser and the galvanizer. The

coating thickness on the renovated areas shall be a minimum of 100 μm unless the

purchaser advises the galvanizer otherwise.

Before renovation, sanding tools such as sandpaper, wire balls or other pre-treatment

methods should be used to remove foreign objects such as oxides and dirt from the

surface to ensure adhesion between the renovation layer and the base metal. Then clean

the surface to be repaired with a rag and spray the rich zinc paint on the cleaned surface

(spray distance: 10-15cm, spray angle: 30-50°), zinc-rich paint with a zinc content of 95%

or more is recommended, except for special requirements. After renovation, the product

should be placed in a ventilated and dry environment to dry naturally. After the repaired

surface is dry, test the renovated thickness of the coating, and only the qualified one can

be packed or other operations. Finish coat will not be applied unless required.

七、Adhesion

Adhesion between zinc and basis metal does not generally need to be tested as adequate

bonding is characteristic of the galvanizing process and the coated work should be able

to withstand, without peeling or flaking, handling consistent with the nature and

thickness of the coating and the normal use of the article. Bending or forming after hot

dip galvanizing are not considered to be normal handling. If adhesion is required to be

tested, cross-cutting test or hammering test is recommended.

7.1 Cross-cutting test

Cross-cutting test is suitable for galvanized steel parts, fasteners and parts that are not

easily tested by hammering method.

Determine adhesion of the zinc coating to the surface of the base metal by cross-cutting

test with the point of a stout knife, applied with considerable pressure in a manner

tending to remove a portion of the coating. The adhesion shall be considered inadequate

if the coating flakes off in the form of a layer of the coating so as to expose the base metal

in advance of the knife point. Do not use testing carried out at edges or corners (points of

lowest coating adhesion) to determine adhesion of the coating. Likewise, do not use

removal of small particles of the coating by paring or whittling to determine failure.

7.2 Hammering method

Hammering test only used for galvanized steel part.

The hammer quality should not less than 210g, with a distance of not less than 30cm from

the product tested surface, the hammering point needs to be more than 10mm from the

part edge, corner, end, swing the hammer as close as possible to free fall, hammering test

on the sampled products, a total of 5 points. No peeling off or convex is qualified.
