Young Learners Create a Course
Workflow Changes
AWS takes the data privacy of young learners seriously and is committed to
complying with data privacy laws around the world as we provide access to our
valuable learning resources.
Beginning in January 2023, educators at institutions that enroll young learners,
defined as those younger than the minimum ages in the AWS Learner Terms, will see
changes to the “Create a Course” workflow as well as learner account creation and
management.
A learner under the minimum age requirement, as defined in our AWS Learner Terms,
will be considered a young learner. Young learners will primarily be associated with
Secondary or Further Education institutions.

Logging into LMS – Educators

Go to the AWS Academy Portal and log in using your email as the user name and
enter password. Then click on the LMS tab.

2
Creating a Class – Young Learners
Workflow
To create a new course, click ‘Account’. Then click Create a Class.

Select a course from the dropdown menu and then fill in the next fields.
Educators can enter a numerical number in Number of Learners, or they can use the
up and down arrows to make the selection. These learners will be added as
anonymous learners and will have a username and password designated for them.
Note: Educators can add a maximum of 250 young learners to each course.
All fields are required before the course can be submitted for creation. Click Submit
when finished.

3
The COURSE CREATED, PROVISIONING IN PROCESS page indicates that the course
request was successfully submitted. Click Done when finished.
Note: The course may take up to 12 hours to appear in the educator’s Courses section.
The educator will receive an email to let them know that the course was successfully
added to the account.

4
Adding Young Learners to the Course
Educators can add additional Young Learners to a course ad hoc. In order to do this,
the course must exist in the ‘Courses’ section of Canvas. Click on the course name.

Then, click Add Learners from the course home page.

5
The Add Learner page allows you to add anonymous learners to your course. The
maximum number of young learners listed is dependent on the number of students
added during course creation.
In the scenario below, 10 young learners were originally added. This means that a
maximum of 240 young learners can be added.
Educators can use either the text box to add a number of students, or use the arrow
buttons. Be sure to click Submit when finished.

A confirmation message will appear when additional young learners have been
successfully added to the course.

6
How to View Young Learners
Educators are responsible for sending logins and passwords to their young learners.
This can be completed from the course in Canvas. Click on the course name.

Click People on the left-hand side menu. This page lists all learners enrolled in your
course. The anonymous learners have a login ID listed only.

7
How to Manage Young Learners
Educators are responsible for sending Young Learners their login and passwords. Click
Files from the course menu. Then, select Usernames_Passwords to obtain each user’s
information for the course.

Educators can select either a .txt or .csv file to download the user’s information. Each
file contains login details for all young learners enrolled in the course.

Shown below is the .txt file. The Login URL, Username and Password can be copied
and sent to young learners individually. The young learner can then use this
information to login to the course and get started.

9
To help with ease of tracking, we recommend educators download the csv file and
edit the file to include student names across their corresponding login information.
Educators should work with their admin/IT to securely pass on this information to
their students. Once educators edit the csv file with student PII, they must not store
it on Canvas or anywhere AWS can access.

How to Add More Learners

Educators can go to the 'Add Learners' menu to add additional students. Please note
that the maximum number of young learners per class is 250.
Once the students are added, the educator can download the new .CSV or .TXT file
that includes the new learner's login URL, username and password.

Learners Login Experience

When a learner first logs into Canvas, they will be presented with the Acceptable Use
Policy page. Tick the box and click Submit.

Note: Young learners will not be able to modify their account information or add any
PII to their profile once they sign in.
