10 Chromatography

The document outlines an experiment to separate colored components in an ink mixture using paper chromatography and to calculate their Rf values. It includes a detailed procedure, materials required, and precautions to ensure accurate results. The principle of the experiment is based on the solubility of the components as they move with the solvent through the paper.

Experiment 10

Aim: To separate the coloured components present in the ink mixture by paper chromatography and find their R f values.
Materials Required: Chromatography jar, Whatman filter paper, fine capillary tube, mixture of inks (blue and red),
ethanol-water mixture
Procedure
1. Took a Whatman filter paper strip and marked a line at a distance of 2 cm from one of the ends of the paper using a
pencil.
2. Put a spot of the ink mixture on the marked line with the help of a fine capillary.
3. Suspended the filter paper vertically in the Chromatography jar containing the solvent (ethanol-water) in such a way
that the marked line remains above the solvent.
4. Covered the jar and kept it undisturbed. After appropriate time, marked the distance travelled by the solvent.
5. Measured the distance of inks travelled from original line.
6. Calculated the Rf value of the inks.
Result
Rf value of red ink =
Rf value of blue ink =
Precautions
1. Dip the paper strip in the solvent in such a way that the spot of the mixture is above the solvent level.
2. While spotting the test solution on the paper, do not allow the spots to spread. Use finely drawn capillary to put the spot
on the paper.

Aim: To separate the coloured components present in the ink mixture by paper chromatography and find their R f values.

Principle involved: As the moving phase by capillary action passes through the spot on which sample has been
adsorbed, it dissolves the components more or less readily; depending upon the solubility and carries them along with it
while moving on the support.
