INTRODUCTION
In a world where the echoes of environmental degradation are
becoming more apparent each day, there is hope in the form of
environmental awareness. As we traverse the complexities of modern life,
the call to action for cleaner, greener surroundings becomes more important.
To address this issue, on April 20, 2024, the National Service Training
Program-Civic Welfare Training Service (NSTP-CWTS) trainees of Barangay
Bangkerohan implemented a series of environmental actions aimed at raising
community knowledge, cleanliness, and sustainability for future generations.
The importance of community activities to protect and preserve our
world is immeasurable given the increasing ecological threats. It fosters
collective action, raises awareness, and creates a sense of responsibility
among individuals. By engaging in activities such as clean-up activities, tree
planting initiatives, and environmental education programs, communities can
mitigate environmental damage and promote sustainability in the future.
Additionally, these activities help build solidarity and resilience, making
communities better equipped to address environmental challenges
collaboratively.
OBJECTIVES
The primary aim of these activities is to increase understanding and
concern for environmental matters. The project is led by NSTP-CWTS trainees
in partnership with Barangay and SK Officials.
Specifically, this aims to:
Increase understanding and consciousness about
environmental issues, such as conservation, sustainability, and climate
change.
Motivate participants to become advocates for
environmental initiatives within their communities or organizations.
Improve the cleanliness and aesthetics of the
environment.
Reduce the risk of environmental hazards and health-
related issues associated with litter and pollution, creating safer and
healthier living environments for residents.
NARRATIVE STATEMENT
a. Preliminaries
On April 27, 2024, the NSTP-CWTS (National Service Training Program
- Civic Welfare Training Service) trainees of Barangay Bangkerohan embarked
on an environmental awareness and cleanup initiative. This activity aimed to
foster a sense of environmental responsibility among the trainees and
contribute to the community's efforts in maintaining a clean and healthy
environment. Preparations for this activity began days in advance, involving
coordination with local barangay officials, and organizing the schedule for the
day.
b. Activities
The day started early, with trainees gathering at the Barangay hall at
6:00 AM in the morning for a brief orientation. Barangay SK Chairman and
other Barangay officials welcomed the volunteers and trainees and
emphasized the importance of environmental stewardship. They also
provided an overview of the specific areas that required attention.
Equipped with gloves, garbage bags, and cleaning tools, the trainees
were divided into groups and assigned to different zones within Barangay
Bangkerohan. The cleanup covered public areas, including the covered court
and streets. Each group was accompanied by a local volunteer who guided
them throughout the activity.
As the clean-up progressed, the trainees encountered various types of
waste, ranging from plastic bottles and food wrappers to discarded
household items. Trainees worked diligently to remove trash, sort
recyclables, and ensure proper disposal of waste.
Furthermore, the initiative included an educational component. NSTP-
CWTS trainees conducted mini-orientations, discussing topics such as waste
segregation, recycling, and the impact of pollution on ecosystems. These
activities aimed to empower trainees with knowledge and practical tips on
how to reduce their environmental impact.
Lastly, the NSTP-CWTS trainees conducted a 3R (reduce, reuse,
recycle) activity, promoting creativity as they transformed the plastic bottles
that they had collected in the clean-up drive into plant pots. At 1:00 PM, the
trainees congregated and were individually armed with gloves, scissors, and,
of course, a collection of plastic bottles. With the materials, trainees started
by cleaning and cutting the bottles, meticulously shaping them into pot-like
structures. As they worked, laughter and conversation filled the air, fostering
a sense of camaraderie.
Once the basic shapes were formed, the once-empty bottles were
gradually filled with soil and seeds, symbolizing the transformation from
waste to growth. With each seed planted, the trainees reaffirmed their
commitment to nurturing both the environment and their community. By the
end of the day, a vibrant array of plant pots adorned the makeshift garden,
serving as a tangible reminder of the power of collective action and the
potential for positive change.
In conclusion, the Environmental Awareness and Cleanup Initiative in
Barangay Bangkerohan was a resounding success. The NSTP-CWTS trainees
not only contributed to a cleaner community but also gained valuable
insights into the significance of environmental conservation. This experience
underscored the power of collective action and the importance of instilling
environmental values in youth. Moving forward, the partnership between the
NSTP-CWTS program and Barangay Bangkerohan promises to yield more
collaborative efforts aimed at creating a sustainable and eco-friendly
community.
PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED
Despite the overall success of the initiative, several challenges were
encountered:
Insufficient cleaning materials: There were not enough
walis tingting and trash bags for all participants, which led to delays
and the need for groups to share equipment.
Lack of community participation: While the initiative
was well-received by those who attended, there was a noticeable lack
of participation from the broader community. Many residents were
either unaware of the event or chose not to participate.
Waste disposal issues: The local waste disposal
facilities were overwhelmed by the volume of trash collected, leading
to temporary storage problems.
RECOMMENDATIONS
To improve future environmental initiatives, the following
recommendations are proposed:
Better resource management: ensure an adequate
supply of cleaning materials and equipment for all participants. This
can be achieved through better planning and possibly by providing
each volunteer with cleaning materials.
Enhanced community engagement: increase efforts to
engage the community prior to the event. This could involve more
extensive use of social media, local radio, and door-to-door
campaigns to raise awareness and encourage participation.
Improved Waste Management Coordination:
coordinate more effectively with local waste management authorities
to ensure they are prepared for the volume of waste collected. This
might involve pre-arranged pickups and temporary storage solutions.
