TracVision M5/M7 – Switchplate
®

Configuration
The following instructions explain how to install and operate the
HDTV Tri-Sat AutoSwitch Kit on a TracVision M5/M7 system –
switchplate configuration.

The HDTV Tri-Sat AutoSwitch Kit allows DIRECTV HDTV

subscribers to enjoy high-definition (HD) programming and switch
automatically among the DIRECTV Ku band 101, 110, and 119
satellites when using a DIRECTV H21-200 or H20-600 receiver. In
addition, since any DIRECTV H21-200 or H20-600 receiver equipped
with a Tri-Sat AutoSwitch can control satellite selection, when
multiple Tri-Sat AutoSwitches are installed, you can control satellite
selection from multiple Tri-Sat AutoSwitch-equipped receivers.

Installing the HDTV Tri-Sat AutoSwitch Kit

This section explains how to install the HDTV Tri-Sat AutoSwitch Kit.
These instructions require additional/alternate installation steps than
those specified in the TracVision M5/M7 Installation Guide. These
instructions supersede the TracVision M5/M7 installation and
operation instructions where applicable.

Step 1 - Modify System Wiring

You need to wire the TracVision M5/M7 system differently than
specified in the TracVision M5/M7 Installation Guide. The following
instructions explain how to modify the TracVision M5/M7 system for
HDTV Tri-Sat AutoSwitch Kit use.

CAUTION
For your own safety, be sure to disconnect power from all wired
components before performing this procedure.

Upgrading Previously Installed TracVision M5/M7 Systems

If you are installing the HDTV Tri-Sat AutoSwitch Kit to upgrade a
TracVision M5/M7 system that is already installed on the vessel,
follow the steps below.

a. Disconnect any components connected to the antenna’s

RF1 and RF2 cables.
b. Proceed to “Step 2 - Set Up the System” on page 3.

Upgrading New/Not-Previously-Installed TracVision M5/M7 Systems

If you are installing the HDTV Tri-Sat AutoSwitch Kit as part of a new
TracVision M5/M7 system installation, note the following variations
to the TracVision M5/M7 Installation Guide:

• Only wire receivers as specified in these instructions.

• Do not mount the switchplate until you have finished
installing the HDTV Tri-Sat AutoSwitch Kit.

Step 2 - Set Up the System

Now follow the instructions below to set up the TracVision M5/M7
system for HDTV Tri-Sat AutoSwitch Kit use.

Flash the RF PCB

The antenna’s RF software now needs to be updated, or “flashed” to
ensure compatibility with the Tri-Sat AutoSwitch. Flashing also allows
the antenna to use the most current satellite configuration data
available. This procedure requires a PC with the latest version of the
KVH Flash Update Wizard with the most recent software updates
installed.

TIP: The KVH Flash Update Wizard is now available to KVH-authorized

dealers through the KVH Partner Portal.

TIP: If you need to check if your PC has the most current software updates
available, select “Check for Updates” from the Flash Update Wizard’s Update
menu after you have established an internet connnection (see Figure 1).

a. Double-click the KVH Flash Update Wizard shortcut on

your PC’s desktop to start the Flash Update Wizard.

b. Follow the instructions provided in the Flash Update

Wizard’s “Help” menu to connect a PC to your specific
TracVision system.

c. Follow the Flash Update Wizard’s onscreen

instructions to flash the RF PCB.

Install Satellites
Now you need to install the correct set of satellites for HDTV Tri-Sat
AutoSwitch Kit use. To install satellites, you will need a DB9 male-to-
female serial data cable. The male-to-female serial data cable is
available from KVH (Part #32-0628-06) and Radio Shack (Part #26-117).

a. Set the switchplate’s power switch to the Off (down)

position.
b. Connect the female end of the cable to your PC.
Connect the other end to the maintenance port on the
front of the TracVision M5/M7 switchplate.

c. Set the switchplate to the On (up) position.

d. Wait one minute for the system to initialize.

e. Double-click the Flash Update Wizard shortcut on your

PC’s desktop to start the Flash Update Wizard.
NOTE: You do not need to flash the antenna; you will simply
type commands in the Flash Update Wizard’s “TracVision
Antenna Comms” window. Be sure to click the “TracVision
Antenna Comms” window to select it before typing.

f. Type HALT in the Antenna Comms window then press

Enter.
g. Type SATINSTALL,TRISAT,DSS then press Enter.

Step 3 - Connect the HDTV Tri-Sat AutoSwitch Kit

This section explains how to connect the HDTV Tri-Sat AutoSwitch Kit
and a DIRECTV H21-200 or H20-600 receiver.

NOTE: If you are installing the HDTV Tri-Sat AutoSwitch Kit to upgrade a
new/not-previously-installed system, be sure to also wire the switchplate as
specified in the TracVision M5/M7 Installation Guide.

CAUTION
For your own safety, be sure to disconnect power from all wired
components before performing this procedure.

NOTE: For information on wiring additional components, refer to the

"Appendix" on page 11.

a. Connect the antenna’s RF1 cable (A) to the “From Antenna”

connector on the Tri-Sat AutoSwitch (see Figure 4).

b. Connect one end of the RJ22-to-RJ22 data cable (B) to the back
of the TracVision switchplate. Connect the other end to the
“Control Output” connector on the Tri-Sat AutoSwitch.
NOTE: Be sure to use the RJ22-to-RJ22 data cable (KVH
Part #32-0724-25) supplied in the kit (refer to the Contents
List for more information). The kit contains multiple data
cable types to accommodate several TracVision products and
configurations.

c. Connect one end of a coaxial cable (C) to the “DIRECTV HD

Receiver Coax” connector on the Tri-Sat AutoSwitch. Connect
the other end to the “Satellite In” connector on the DIRECTV
H21-200 or H20-600 receiver.
d. Connect one end of the USB cable (D) to the “DIRECTV HD
Receiver USB” connector on the Tri-Sat AutoSwitch. Connect
the other end to the “USB” connector on the DIRECTV H21-200
or H20-600 receiver.

Receiver Installation
Be sure to follow these guidelines when installing the receiver.

• The HDTV Tri-Sat AutoSwitch Kit is compatible only with

DIRECTV model H21 receivers that have manufacturer
ID 200 and DIRECTV model H20 receivers that have
manufacturer ID 600.
• If a new DIRECTV H20-600 receiver has a software version
earlier than 0x0F14, disconnect the receiver from the Tri-Sat
AutoSwitch and connect the receiver to the antenna while
the antenna is tracking the DIRECTV 101 satellite. Then
turn on the receiver and contact DIRECTV at
1-800-DIRECTV to initiate a software update. Once the
update is complete, unplug the receiver and reconnect the
Tri-Sat AutoSwitch.
NOTE: Refer to the receiver’s User’s Guide for information
on viewing the receiver software version.

• The DIRECTV H21-200 or H20-600 receiver must be

configured as an “Oval, 3, LNB” dish type. Refer to the
receiver manual for configuration instructions.
• Upon startup, the receiver might take 30 minutes or more
to fully load the program guide for all three DIRECTV
satellites. Be sure to only select channels carried on the 101
satellite until the program guide is fully loaded.

Step 4 - Test the System

a. Turn on the TracVision M5/M7 system and the Tri-Sat
AutoSwitch-equipped receiver.
b. Select channel 490 using the Tri-Sat AutoSwitch-
equipped receiver’s remote. Verify that the TV screen
displays the test channel text at the bottom of the screen
(see table below).
NOTE: Do not change channels at the receiver’s signal
strength screen; the Tri-Sat AutoSwitch does not detect
changes at that screen.

Using the HDTV Tri-Sat AutoSwitch Kit

This section explains how to operate the TracVision M5/M7 system
with the HDTV Tri-Sat AutoSwitch Kit installed.

Switching Satellites
When the Tri-Sat AutoSwitch (included in the HDTV Tri-Sat
AutoSwitch Kit) is coupled with a DIRECTV H21-200 or H20-600
receiver, the antenna automatically switches among the DIRECTV
101, 110, and 119 satellites as the user changes channels using the
receiver’s remote.

NOTE: The receiver might take up to 30 seconds to display video when

changing channels, switching between satellites, and/or switching between
standard-definition and high-definition channels.

TIP: For your convenience, KVH lists the DIRECTV HDTV channels, and
the DIRECTV satellites that carry them, on the web at [Link]/
HDlineup. Since DIRECTV changes its channel lineups frequently, KVH
can e-mail updates to you whenever the HDTV lineup changes. Register for
this free service when you visit the website for the first time.

Using the HDTV Tri-Sat AutoSwitch Kit with Multiple Receivers

Since the antenna can only track one satellite at a time, all receivers can
only view channels that are carried by the currently tracked satellite.
Therefore, switching satellites on one Tri-Sat AutoSwitch-equipped
receiver might cause televisions connected to other receivers to display
the wrong programming, no programming, or an error message. TV
viewers can simply change the channel until they select a channel
carried by the new satellite, or they can use any Tri-Sat AutoSwitch-
equipped receiver to switch back to the original satellite.

NOTE: Only Tri-Sat AutoSwitch-equipped DIRECTV H21-200 and

H20-600 receivers control satellite selection. Other receiver models and
additional DIRECTV H21-200 or H20-600 receivers without a mated Tri-Sat
AutoSwitch cannot control satellite selection, but they can change channels
on the currently selected satellite.

Using the HDTV Tri-Sat AutoSwitch Kit with Additional Tri-Sat AutoSwitch-
equipped DIRECTV H21-200 or H20-600 Receivers
The Tri-Sat AutoSwitch enables automatic satellite switching for one
DIRECTV H21-200 or H20-600 receiver. However, when two or more
Tri-Sat AutoSwitches are installed, any Tri-Sat AutoSwitch-equipped
receiver can control satellite selection. The last Tri-Sat AutoSwitch-
equipped receiver to change channels controls satellite selection until
another Tri-Sat AutoSwitch-equipped receiver changes channels.
