Short Notes: EE 5211 - Servodrives and Power Electronic Control
1. DC Motor Drives
Key Concepts:
- Armature-Control vs Field-Control
- Armature-control is used in servo applications because it provides better speed response and higher efficiency
compared to field-control. Field-control is slower and less efficient due to higher inductance in the field circuit.
- Torque and Back EMF:
E = K_e * omega (Back EMF)
T = K_t * I_a (Electromagnetic Torque)
Where:
E = Back EMF,
omega = Motor angular speed,
T = Torque,
I_a = Armature current,
K_e = Back EMF constant,
K_t = Torque constant.
- Armature Voltage and Speed Relation:
omega_no_load = E / K_e
- Current Ripple in Chopper Drives:
Delta_I_pp = (V_supply - V_a) * Duty * T_chop / L_a
Where:
V_supply = Supply voltage,
V_a = Armature voltage,
Duty = Duty cycle,
T_chop = Chopper period,
L_a = Armature inductance.
Important Formulae:
- Armature current:
I_a = (V_supply - E) / R_a
- Mechanical Power:
P_mech = T_em * omega
- Efficiency:
eta = (P_output / P_input) * 100
