STORY
TITLE: THE MAGIC CALABASH (part 1)
Maimouna’s father, maimouna’s mother, maimouna’s sister and maimouna (girl).
In this village, there’s no a poor family like the one of maimouna family. Maimouna is a
brave girl. Usually, she goes to the forest for making a cut in woods. One day, she went to the
forest for carrying the woods for cooking, but unfortunately she comes back and does not find
no one.
Maimouna: dad! mum! Sister! I am back from forest!
No one replies. She asks to the neighbor
Maimouna: please, where did they go?
Neighbor: your father is going to the hunt, your mother and sister went to the source to
draw water. Oh I almost forgot, take this is the key to your home they left it here.
Maimouna: ooh okay, thank you!
Neighbor: you’re welcome!
she opened the door and released the plates to wash them, she finished washing and after
cooked the food. In the evening, everyone around at the table eating. In the morning, the
father goes to search the job in the downtown. The two sisters are not studying, because their
father has not the means for providing them with school.
They were in the living room watching TV and someone knocked on the door: ‘Toc! Toc!’,
maimouna’s sister goes to open the door. It’s a man with helmet.
Maimouna’s sister: hello, who are you?
Taxi man: I am a taxi man. Is it maimouna family?
Maimouna’s sister: yes, what can I do for you?
Taxi man: your father has made an accident, he sent me telling you that he is at the
hospital
Maimouna’s sister: oh my god! What! Maimouna come!
Maimouna: what’s happen?
Maimouna’s sister: this man is a taxi man, he come telling us that our father has made
an accident, he is at the hospital
Maimouna: really! What’s hospital? please mister
Taxi man: the great hospital of the town
Maimouna: alright, let’s go!
They arrived at the hospital and met the doctor.
Doctor: hello, is it maimouna family?
Maimouna: yes, it is. How goes our father?
Doctor: he is seriously ill; we have to operate on him immediately if there is no money
he will die.
Maimouna: ok, alright doctor. We will do our best to save him, thanks for the warning.

TITLE: THE MAGIC CALABASH (part 2)
In the morning, maimouna goes for a walk thinking in the village, she come across with an
old woman. The old woman called her and says:
old woman: when I saw your face I understood that something did not work, tell me
what’s wrong?
Maimouna: yes, you’re right. I have a worry in my heart but…
Old woman: do not be afraid, tell me I could help you perhaps.
Maimouna: well, my father is at the hospital in downtown and we must operate on him
soon but there’s no money and the doctor said that he must to do this surgery
immediately or else he will die.
Old woman: ok. I’m going to help you but all I will ask; you will be able to do it?
Maimouna: yes, with pleasure.
Old woman: ok. First, you wash me all these wounds and then you help me to pound
the cassava leaves.
Maimouna: alright grandma!
When she finished doing everything that old woman had asked her, the old woman told her to
go to the river.
Old woman: listen to me go to the river and you will see many calabashes floating on
the water, there are the big and small; the small say: ‘Don’t take me! don’t take me!’
and the big say: ‘Take me! Take me!’ then you will take the small one.
Maimouna: okay I will do what you said.
Old woman: go on!
Maimouna goes to the river and finds everything that old woman had told her. Then she took
the small one as the old woman had said and goes back home. She removed the cover of the
calabash and it was diamonds, golds and plenty money inside of the Calabash. She took the
money to give the doctor for the medical care of their father and to execute the surgery. The
surgery is done finally the father is recovered. The maimouna family become wealthy. With
those diamonds, golds and money, they built the great house, the shop and bought cars, new
armchairs, clothes then two sisters went back to school.
One week later, the two sisters are in the bedroom talking about the wealth:
Maimouna’s sister: how did you do to be lucky?
Maimouna: let me explain you, I hope you remember the last week when I was going
to walk for to think how to get money for the surgery of our father to be done and to
save him,
Maimouna’s sister: yes, I remember
Maimouna: I come across with an old woman, the latter had seen on my face and
understood that I had a worry in my heart, she called and asked me many things that I
never thought.
Maimouna’s sister: ooh really! It’s moving! I will also go to walk maybe I can get
many things more than you.
Maimouna: okay alright, no problem.

TITLE: THE MAGIC CALABASH (part 3) The End
Tomorrow morning, maimouna’s sister goes to walk like her sister. She always comes across
with the same old woman; she’s stopped at a distance then the old woman called her:
Old woman: come on my daughter, don’t be afraid.
Maimouna’s sister: here I am, what do you want? (arrogantly talk)
Old woman: I know that you’re worrying about something, what’s wrong?
Maimouna’s sister: I need money for paying the fees for my studies
Old woman: well, I could help you perhaps, but first you wash me all these wounds
and then you help me to pound the cassava leave.
Maimouna’s sister: what! I cannot do it, never!
Old woman: as you won’t do what I’m telling you, go to the river you’ll see lot of
calabashes floating on the water. there are big and small; the small say: ‘Don’t take
me! don’t take me!’ and the big say: ‘Take me! Take me!’ then you will take the
small one.
Maimouna’s sister: alright!
Old woman: go on!
She goes to the river and see many calabashes are floating on the water, instead of taking the
small calabash as the old woman has told her, she took the big one believing that big one
contains lot of things more than the small one. She is back at home and calling everyone in
the living room (crying):
Maimouna’s sister: Mum! Dad! Come see!
Maimouna’s mother: what is it? Why are you crying?
Maimouna’s sister: this is again the calabash that maimouna got last week, we will
become again the richest that before!
Maimouna’s mother: really! That is truth?
Maimouna’s sister: yes, mum!
Maimouna gets out from their bedroom and see the big calabash she exclaimed:
Maimouna: what! What a bad luck?
Maimouna’s sister: why are you saying that?
Maimouna: nothing, open!
she removed the cover and it was lot of snakes, spiders in that Calabash
Maimouna: that’s why I said a bad luck.
Six months later, the wealth was disappeared and everything they bought and built like:
house, armchairs, cars, clothes, shops, enterprises… were disappeared even diamonds, golds
were disappeared too, because maimouna did not go to thank that old woman for this benefit
she had done for their family. The misfortune is come back and they once again become the
poorest family that they’d never thought then they returned to the village.
