Total Marks 10
1. An event A is known to be independent of the events B, B ∪ C and B ∩ C, show that A and C are
independent events (with proper justification).
2. Consider a scenario where a coin is tossed n times, and let p represent the probability of getting heads
in each toss. Suppose X denotes the number of heads minus the number of tails. Find the cumulative
distribution function and expectation of X.
3. What is the expectation of the number of failures preceding the first success in an infinite sequence of
Bernoulli trials?
4. A box contains ‘a’ white and ‘b’ black balls, ‘c’ balls are drawn at random. Find the expected value
of the number of white balls drawn.
5. There are three coins, identical in appearance, one of which is ideal and the other two are biased with
1
probability 3 and 23 , respectively for a head. One coin is taken at random and tossed twice. If a head
appears both times, then what is the probabilty that the ideal coin was chosen?
6. Two unbiased dice are thrown. Find the conditional probability that two fives occur if it is known
that total is divisible by 5?
7. Find the probability distribution of the square of a Poisson µ variate.(Given that pmf of X ∼ P (µ) is
e−x xi
P (X = i) = i! , i = 0, 1, 2, ...)
8. From the numbers 1, 2, ..., 2n + 1 three numbers are chosen at random. What is the probability that
these three numbers are in A.P.?
9. Find the median of the random variable X ∼ B(3, 1/4). The probability mass function (pmf) of X is
given by, for i = 0, 1, 2, 3,
3 1 i
P (X = i) = i ( 4 ) (1 − 41 )3−i .
10. Derive the moment generating function (MGF) of the Poisson distribution. The pmf is given by
e−x xi
P (X = i) = i! , i = 0, 1, 2, ... . Hence derive mean and skewness.
