Unit 2 Lab
Constructions

In this unit, you learned how to use a compass to create constructions. You also learned
how to write two-column proofs to provide a logical argument for a mathematical
statement made. In this lab, you will practice both.

You will need a straight edge and a compass to complete this lab.

1. (5 pts) Using your compass, practice drawing a few circles. Draw 10 concentric
circles (circles with different radii but the same center). Sometimes, turning the
paper and holding the compass still is easier than turning the compass. Submit
your drawing.

2. (5 pts) Using the line segment below, open your compass and put the sharp end at
A and the pencil at B. Now, draw a circle with the center at point A. Using the
same opening, draw another circle with the center at point B. The two circles
intersect above the line. Label that point of intersection C. Connect points A, B,
and C. What type of triangle did you create? How do you know? Submit your
drawing.
3. (5 pts) Exploration: Do the same construction as Question 2, but this time, label
both points above and below the circle. By connecting those two points, you’ve
created a perpendicular bisector of a line segment.

4. (10 pts) Use the image below to bisect an angle. With the center of your circle at
point A, draw an arc that intersects each ray of your angle. Label those
intersection points B and C. At point B, draw a circle; at point C, draw a circle.
Where your two circles intersect in the middle of your angle, label that point D. If
your circles do not intersect, make the radius of your circle larger. Now connect D
and A. This segment you created is an angle bisector. Submit your drawing.

5. (10 pts) In Question 4, you created an angle bisector. Explain how you know
∠BAD ≅ ∠CAD.

6. (15 pts) Based on the previous constructions, you can create a 45-degree angle, a
30-degree angle, a rectangle, and even parallel lines. Pick two of these to
construct using your compass and a straightedge only. Explain step-by-step how
you did your constructions. Do not erase any stray marks; those marks are part of
your construction.
