Venn Diagram

Ex1.
30 out of a group of 40 students completed their mathematics homework. 25 students

completed their science homework. How many students completed both homework?

Solution:
Let the number of students who completed both homework be S. Note that S has been counted
twice.

30 + 25 – S = 40
55 – S = 40
S = 55 – 40 = 15
 15 students completed both homework.

PRACTICE
1.
34 students from Class 4E subscribe to Today's Scientists Magazine. 22 students from the same
class subscribe to Animals' World Magazine. How many students subscribe to both magazines if
the class size is 42?
2.
Two pieces of table cloth with areas of 8000 cm2 and 6000 cm2 are overlapped as shown below.
There is an overlap of 2000 cm2. Find the total area of the two pieces of table cloth.

3.
Among 100 people who are being interviewed, 68 like music and 75 like sports.
How many people like both music and sports?
4.
The figure below is made up of A, B and C, which are squares of sides 10 cm, 6 cm
and 3 cm respectively. What is the area of the figure?

Among the Primary 5 students who took part in the final examination, 45 of them scored distinction
for mathematics. 78 students scored distinction for English, 3 8 of them scored distinction for both
subjects and 64 students did not get distinction for either subject. How big was the cohort of
Primary 5 students?

part in a science competition. 20 students took part in both competitions and 64 of them did not
take part in either competition. How many Primary 5 students were there?
10.
The figure above shows 3 circles that overlap one another. The areas of A, B and C are 20 cm2, 26
cm2 and 18 cm2 respectively. The following areas in the Venn diagram are S1= 6 cm2, S2= 8 cm2
and S3 = 10 cm2.
Find the area of S0 if the total area of the figure is 45 cm2.

11.
A total of 9 regions are formed by 5 circles. Two such regions are assigned the numbers 12 and
15. Use the numbers 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 11 only once to assign the rest of the regions so that
the sum of numbers in each circle is 20.
