ASSIGNMENT 77
SHEET 3 : THERMODYNAMICS
1. Two moles of a diatomic idea gas is taken through a process PT = const. Its temperature is
increased from T0 to 2T0. Find the work done by the system?

2. At 1 atm pressure, 1 gram of water having a volume of 1 cm3 becomes 1.091 cm3 of ice on freezing.
The heat of fusion of water at 1 atm is 80 cal/gm. What is the change in the internal energy during
the process?

3. Find the molar heat capacity of the process P = a/T for a monoatomic gas, ‘a’ being positive
constant.

4. A gaseous mixture enclosed in a vessel consists of one gm mole of a gas A with ɣ = 5/3 and some
amount of gas B with ɣ = 7/5 at a temperature T. The gases A and B do not react with each other
and are assumed to be ideal. Find the number of gram moles of the gas B if ɣ for the gaseous
mixture is 19/13.

5. An ideal monoatomic gas at temperature 27°C and pressure 106 N/m2 occupies 10 litre volume.
10,000 cal of heat is added to the system without changing the volume. Calculate the inal
temperature of the gas. R = 8.31 and J = 4.18

6. An ideal gas is taken through a cyclic thermodynamic process through 4 steps. The amounts of
heat involved in these steps are Q1 = 5960 J; Q2 = -5585 J; Q3 = -2980 J; and Q4 = 3645 J. The
corresponding works involved are W1 = 2200J; W2 = -825J; W3 = - 1100J and W4 respectively.
a. Find W4
b. What is the ef iciency of the cycle.

7. At 27°C, two moles of an ideal monoatomic gas occupy a volume V. The gas expands adiabatically
to a volume 2V. Calculate
a. Final temperature of the gas
b. Change in its internal energy
c. Work done by the gas during the process [ R = 8.31]

8. One mole of a monoatomic ideal gas is taken through the cycle as shown in igure.
A —> B. Adiabatic expansion
B —> C. Cooling at constant volume
C —> D Adiabatic compression
D —> A Heating at constant volume.
The pressure and temperature at A, B; etc are denoted by PA, TA; PB, TB etc respectively.

Given TA = 1000 K, PB = (2/3) PA and PC = (1/3)PA. Calculate

a. The work done by the gas in the process A —> B

b. Heat lost by the gas in the process B —> C
c. Temperature TD
[Given (2/3)2/5 = 0.85 & R = 8.31 J/mol K]

9. A ixed mass of gas is taken through a process A —> B —> C —> A. Here A —> B is isobaric, B —> C is
adiabatic and C —> A is isothermal. Find :
a. Pressure and volume at C;
b. Work done in the process (take ɣ = 1.5)

10. Two identical containers A and B with frictionless pistons contain the same ideal gas at the same
temperature and the same volume V. The mass of gas contained in A is mA and that in B is mB. The gas in
each cylinder is now allowed to expand isothermally to the same inal volume 2V. The change in the
pressure in A and B are found to be Δ P and 1.5 ΔP, respectively, then
a. 4mA = 9mB b. 2mA = 3mB c. 3mA = 2mB d. 9mA = 4mB

11. P-V plots for two gases during adiabatic processes are shown in the igure. Plots 1 and 2 should
correspond, respectively to

d. He and O2 b. O2 and He c. He and Ar d. O2 and N2
