NOUNS

Nouns are words that name people, places, things, animals, or ideas.
They are often called naming words because they tell us what
something is called.
Examples of nouns:
People: teacher, Maria, doctor
Places: school, park, Philippines
Things: book, chair, phone
Animals: dog, cat, elephant
Ideas/Feelings: love, happiness, freedom
Types of Nouns
PROPER NOUNS VS. COMMON NOUNS

Names of specific people, places, or things.
Always start with a capital letter.
Examples: Maria, Manila, Eiffel Tower

2. Common Nouns
General names of people, places, or things.
Not capitalized unless at the beginning of a sentence.
Examples: teacher, city, book

COMPOUND NOUNS
6. Compound Nouns
Two or more words combined to make a single noun.
Examples: basketball, toothpaste, mother-in-law
COMPOUND NOUNS
[Link]-form (solid) compound nouns
The words are joined together with no space.
They look like a single word.
Examples:
toothpaste, sunflower, basketball

2. Open-form (spaced) compound nouns


The words are separate, but they work together as one noun.
Usually written with a space between the parts.
Examples:
ice cream, post office, coffee table

3. Hyphenated Compound nouns
these are formed when two or more words are connected by a
hyphen
Example:
mother-in-law
editor-in-chief
well-being
sister-in-law
