Course Description and Learning Goals: This course introduces linguistics as a scientific
study of human language. The lessons throughout the term will mostly focus on major sub-
fields of linguistics: phonetics, phonology, morphology, and some others.
The aim of this course is to make you aware of the complex organization and systematic
nature of language. It is intended to clarify your ideas about language and bring you to a
better understanding of its nature. You will learn more about how languages work by
observing and analysing language(s). By the end of the course, you should be familiar with
some of the terminology and techniques of linguistic analysis and be able to apply this
knowledge to the description of different languages.
Assessment: You are supposed to read each week’s assigned resources (as pre-course
materials*) and participate in class discussions referring to the notes you must take based on
weekly readings. All students will be assumed to have read the sources. I will determine your
grade accordingly:
1. Mid-term (40% of the total)- with 20/25 multiple choice questions-
2. Final (60% of the total)- with 20/25 multiple choice questions-
!!!!!! YOU MUST COME TO CLASS ON TIME- NO EXCUSES FOR BEING LATE WILL
BE ACCEPTED!
!!!!!! ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY (70% of total hours per semester)
