1. Mooving the cows

1. Be quiet, talking is OK
• Do not hit the animals, do not bang the pipes
• Do not shout
• Do not use the dog
2. Be Slower: Cows like to walk not faster than 4
km/hour (people prefer 5-6 km/hour)
3. Keep a distance: Stay at least 2 meters away from
the cows
4. Observe, watch if you are doing well:
• Cows need to walk with the head down
• See where to go: Prevent lameness
• The rear foot will step on the spot of the front
foot, avoiding stones and lameness
2. Bringing cows in the parlor
Train people and train cows
• Train pregnant heifers (1-2 months before calving)
so they become familiar with the waiting area,
crowd gate and milking area before the first
milking
• Train over several days, add a new step each day
• Be quiet, keep distance, do not use force, wait for
the cows to take initiative and investigate themself

• The common stress of the first milking is not the

milking, but the lack of time for the cow to
investigate the area that is new to them
• Leave pregnant heifers at least 30 minutes in the
waiting area before attempting to let them walk
through the parlor

Teach all employees on the basics of cow

handling
• Reduce the risk on accidents for people
and cows
• Reduce the stress and improve the milking
performance
• Reduce lameness
