Chapter 12
1- Lucie’s marriage had a great effect on her father. Discuss
Lucie's marriage had a negative effect upon her father. First after the Doctor's conversation
with Charles Darnay, [Link] observed that the doctor was very pale and silent as the private
conversation that Darnay had with him has brought back all the old terrors and fears of his
days of imprisonment to the Doctor. His mind was torn between the desire for his daughter's
happiness and the fear and hatred he feels towards his old enemies. Upon their departure,
[Link] observed a great change to have come over the doctor, and when he climbed the old
stairs alone to the Doctor's room he was stopped by a low sound of knocking. He went into
the Doctor's room, he saw the bench turned towards the light, and his head was bent down,
and he was busy. [Link] went back to his shoe making. He couldn't remember Miss Pross
or Mr. Lorry. His mind was far from the present. For nine days Dr. Manette had been a
shoemaker. Both Mr. Lorry and Miss Pross had done their best to help [Link] and bring
his mind back to him. On the tenth day, the doctor was completely recovered.
2- "All is lost. What shall I say to my darling Lucie?" Comment
Miss Pross said these words to Mr. Lorry when Dr. Manette had lost his mind after his
daughter's wedding. The doctor remembered nothing about his present. Miss Pross was
troubled and did not know what to do or what to say to Lucie, so they decided to keep what
happened to the doctor as a secret from Lucie.
