Factorising and Solving
Quadratic Equations
Master two essential algebra skills: breaking down quadratic expressions into
their factors, then using those factors to find solutions to quadratic equations.
What is a Quadratic Equation?
A quadratic equation is any equation that can be written in the standard form
ax^2 + bx + c = 0, where a \neq 0. The defining characteristic is that the highest Example
power of the variable x is 2, making it a second-degree polynomial equation.
Key components: Here: a = 1, b = 5, c = 6
• a is the coefficient of x^2 (must be non-zero)
• b is the coefficient of x
• c is the constant term
What Does Factorising Mean?
Expanding
Multiply out brackets
becomes
Factorising
Reverse the process
becomes
Factorising is the process of rewriting a quadratic expression as a product of two binomials. It's essentially
the reverse operation of expanding brackets—we're breaking down a complex expression into simpler
multiplicative components.
How to Factorise a Quadratic Expression
For quadratics in the form x^2 + bx + c, follow this systematic approach:
01 02 03
Find the Magic Pair Write as Binomials Verify Your Work
Identify two numbers that multiply to give Express the quadratic as the product of two Expand the brackets to check you get back
give c and add to give b brackets using those numbers back to the original expression
Worked Example: x^2 + 5x + 6
Find numbers that multiply to 6 and add to 5 → 2 and 3
Therefore: x^2 + 5x + 6 = (x + 2)(x + 3)
Solving Quadratic Equations: Step 1
Once you can factorise, you can solve! The first critical step is proper setup and factorisation.
Set to Zero
Rearrange the equation so one side equals zero: ax^2 + bx + c = 0
Factorise Completely
Express the quadratic as a product of two binomial factors
Worked Example
Solve: x^2 - 2x - 15 = 0
Find numbers that multiply to -15 and add to -2 → -5 and 3
Factorised form: (x - 5)(x + 3) = 0
Solving Quadratic Equations: Steps 2 & 3
Step 3: Solve Linear Equations
Step 2: Apply Zero Product Property
Solve each simple equation to find your solutions
Set each factor equal to zero separately
These linear equations are much simpler than the original quadratic! Each solution represents a point where the parabola crosses the x-axis.
Why Does This Work?
The Zero Product Property
If A \times B = 0, then either A = 0, or B = 0, or both equal zero.
This fundamental property of multiplication is the key that unlocks quadratic equations. By factorising, we transform
factorising, we transform a complex quadratic into a product of factors. The zero product property then allows us to
then allows us to split the problem into two simpler linear equations.

Population Growth of the UAE
The population of the UAE has increased rapidly over the past
decades.
Suppose the population grows at a rate of 2% per year.
Using the Law of Indices, we can express the population after n years
as:
𝑃 = 𝑃0 × (1.02)𝑛
Where 𝑃0 is the initial population.
The exponents show how repeated multiplication (growth) can be
simplified using indices.
This helps economists and planners estimate future housing,
schools, and infrastructure needs.
UAE Vision 2031 – Knowledge and Innovation
•The Law of Indices supports mathematical and scientific
reasoning used in engineering, finance, and technology—
fields vital to the UAE’s growth.
•Developing strong math skills contributes to the UAE’s
vision of becoming a knowledge-based economy.
•Students applying mathematics in real-life UAE contexts
reflect values of innovation, ambition, and excellence—
core elements of Emirati national identity.
