PREFACE
English for Electrical and Electronic Engineering series are aimed to develop the ability
to communicate in English for the students specialized in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at
Hanoi University of Industry. Different from other general English textbooks, the topics and
activities designed in the series have been carefully selected to match the interests and meet the
needs of the students who are studying and going to work in Electrical and Electronic Engineering
fields. As a component of a blended learning program package, the series are used chiefly for face-
to-face lessons which operate along with an integrated program of online learning tasks. To address
the diversity in the interests, English proficiency levels and learning styles of the student
population, excessive care has been taken to allow flexibility in selecting and adapting classroom
activities in response to students’ current learning needs with high priority placed on speaking
skills. A nice mixture of pair, group and individual activities with authentic materials and close-
to-real-life situations are intended to stimulate and maintain students’ learning motivation
throughout the courses.

This book, English for Electrical and Electronic Engineering 6, is the last book in the
series which has been developed for 3rd year students majoring in Electrical and Electronic
Engineering at Hanoi University of Industry. These students are expected to have completed the
first 5 books in the series. This book consists of 8 units covering essential topics of the fields: Unit
1- Manuals, Unit 2- Operation, Unit 3-Product Reviews, Unit 4-Meeting Reports, Unit 5-Making
Requests, Unit 6-Technical Problems and Advice, Unit 7- Professional Portfolio, and Unit 8- Job
interview. Each unit comprises 2 lessons with a warm-up activity and three or four motivational
and encouraging pair-work, group-work or individual activities. Before face-to-face lessons,
students are required to complete all the related online learning tasks which help develop necessary
language knowledge (related vocabulary and structures) and skills for oral interactions and
language practices in face-to-face classes. The check list at the end of each lesson facilitates
students’ learning reflection and develops their ability to monitor their own learning. By the end
of the course, students are expected to develop not only English language skills but also
exploratory, argumentative, analytical, problem solving, and teamwork skills which are
indispensable for their success in study at the University and their work after graduation.

1
With all the burning enthusiasm and all-out effort spent on designing this book, it is hoped
that teachers and students will be using it with full enjoyment and gaining great success in
mastering English for Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

32
What Is CPU (Central Processing Unit) And How Does It Work?
CPU stands for Central Processing Unit. CPU or simply a processor is the most
important part of the computer system. CPU is often considered the brain of the
computer because it’s actually a fundamental component of the computer which is
designed to process, calculate and move the data.
Whenever data or some instructions or programs are requested by a user, the CPU
draws it from the RAM (Random Access Memory) and might some other hardware for
the purpose.
Before sending the information back to RAM, the CPU reads the information
associated with the given task. After reading the information, the CPU starts its
calculation and transports the data. When the data are processed, the CPU is required
to store it in the system’s memory.
A typical CPU consists of 3 parts:
• Control Unit
• Logic Unit
• Main Memory (Register and Cache)
Control Unit: The control unit of the CPU is used to direct the whole computer system
to process program’s instruction using electrical signals. The control unit of a CPU
communicates with ALU and memory to carry out the process instructions.
Logic Unit: Logic unit is also referred as Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU). The ALU is
a digital electronic circuit placed inside the CPU. Logic Unit is the basic building block
of the CPU. It performs simple arithmetic and logical operations.

33
Register: A register is a very small place which is used to hold data of the processor.
A register is used to store information such as instruction, storage address... The
register is the fastest of all the memory devices.
Cache Memory: Cache Memory is a type of memory which is placed in the
processor’s chip. The use of Cache Memory is to store program instructions which are
again and again used by software for an operation. When the CPU processes data, the
data are first looked into the cache memory. If the data are found, then it uses the data
accordingly and if not, then the processor starts to look in the larger memory.

UNIT 1: MANUAL

Transcript (Activity 1 - Lesson 2):

Today I am going to show you how to take apart the iPhone 5 and replace the battery.
It is actually pretty simple, there are only 4 screws total that you have to take out. First
make sure that you turn off your iPhone. Then there are 2 screws down at the bottom.
These is a pentalobe screw. So you will need a special screwdriver to remove them. It
is the same screw driver that you can use on the iPhone 4 or 4s, it will also work for
the iPhone 5. Once you get the 2 screws out, take your suction cup (the bigger the
better) and clip it onto the screen. Then using a plastic non-marring tool, you can kind
of pry away the screen from the base. I personally think it is a little easier to use a razor
blade, but using a razor will leave a few little scratches on the bottom of your device.
Only lift the screen up 90 degrees. Because you can see right there the ribbon cables
might tear if you fold it farther back. There is two screws right here on this metal bit,
holding the battery cable in place to the motherboard. Take off these two screws. They
are just your regular small Phillips head screw. Take off the metal bracket, then you
can unclip the little black cable. It is kind of like a lego piece that clamps in. And then
grab the tab that says “certified personnel only”, and lift out the battery. Take your new
battery and clip it in place to the motherboard, just like a little lego. Snap it in. take
your metal bracket and then screw the same 2 little screws back into place. And
remember that the replacement batteries can be found on [Link], usually they are
pretty cheap. I’ll put a link in the video description below, so you can find that link
easily. And then clamp the screen back on. Make sure you put back the 2 bottom screws
into the phone as well.

UNIT 2: OPERATION

Transcript (Activity 2 - Lesson 1):

While air conditioners can differ from model to model, they all operate on similar
principles. In this video we will address how an air conditioner operates as well as
potential problems you may encounter.

When you switch the air conditioner on, the thermostat control sends 120 volts of
alternating current to the compressor and the fan motor. The compressor acts as a pump
compressing refrigerant in gas form into the condenser coils located near the back of
the unit where the gas is condensed into a hot liquid. The condenser coils dissipate the
heat as the liquid travels through them. Once the refrigerant has passed through the
condenser coils and the capillary tube, it travels to the evaporator coils located near the
front of the unit.

As the refrigerant liquid enters these coils, it expands into a gas which makes the coils
cold. The gas flows through the coils to a suction line attached to the compressor, the
compressor converts the gas back into a liquid and the cooling cycle continues. At the
same time the fan motor rotates a blower wheel which draws in air to be cooled by the
evaporator coils before recirculating it back into the room. The same motor also
operates the condenser fan blade which blows outside air through the condenser coils
to cool them. The air temperature is regulated by the thermostat control. Depending on
the model the control may be a thermostat switch and sensing bulb assembly or an
electronic control board that works with a sensor.

Transcript (Activity 1 - Lesson 2):

A typical CPU has a number of components. The first is the arithmetic logic unit (ALU),
which performs simple arithmetic and logical operations. Second is the control unit
(CU), which manages the various components of the computer. It reads and interprets
instructions from memory and transforms them into a series of signals to activate other
parts of the computer. The control unit calls upon the arithmetic logic unit to perform
the necessary calculations.

114
Third is the cache, which serves as high-speed memory where instructions can be
copied to and retrieved. Early CPUs consisted of many separate components, but since
the 1970s, they have been constructed as a single integrated unit called a
microprocessor. As such, a CPU is a specific type of microprocessor. The individual
components of a CPU have become so integrated that you can't even recognize them
from the outside. This CPU is about two inches by two inches in size.

UNIT 3: PRODUCT REVIEW

Transcript (Activity 2 - Lesson 1):

Shop assistant: Do you need any help?

Paul: Um, yes, we’re looking for a Mac computer. Have you got any fairly basic ones?

Shop assistant: Yes, sure. If you’d like to come over here …

Paul: What different models are there?

Shop assistant: At the moment we’ve got these two models: The iMac, which is a
desktop computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor operating at 2.33 gigahertz, and
the portable MacBook, which has a processor running at 2.0 gigahertz. Core Duo
technology actually means two cores, or processors, built into a single chip, offering
up to twice the speed of a traditional chip.

Sue: So they’re both very fast, then. And which one has more memory? I mean, which
has more RAM?

Shop assistant: Well, the iMac has two gigabytes of RAM, which can be expanded
up to three gigabytes, and the MacBook has one gigabyte, expendable to two
gigabytes. It all depends on your needs. The iMac is suitable for home users and small
offices. The MacBook is more practical if you travel a lot.

Sue: And what’s the storage capacity of the hard drive?

115
Shop assistant: The iMac has a storage capacity of 500 gigabytes, and the MacBook
has a hard drive of 160 gigabytes.

Sue: Do they have a DVD drive?

Shop assistant: Yes, they each come with a DVD SuperDrive that lets you burn all
types of DVDs and CDs. And they feature a camera built right into the display so you
can start a video chat instantly.

Sue: And how much do they cost?

Shop assistant: The iMac is £819 and the MacBook is £1,029. They both come with
wireless networking and Bluetooth.

Paul: What about the operating system?

Shop assistant: Well, every Mac comes with the latest version of Mac OS pre-
installed, that includes Internet software and some programs to organize and edit your
photos, music and movies.

Paul: OK, well, thanks very much. I think we need to go away and think about it for
a bit.
