Beam Deflection and Buckling Analysis

The document outlines a series of lectures by Vanessa Restrepo on the topic of Design for Stiffness, covering various aspects such as beam deflections, singularity functions, buckling, and the introduction to shafts. It includes reviews of exams and homework, as well as specific calculations related to internal moments and slopes in shafts. The content emphasizes the importance of design considerations for static and fatigue strength, deflections, and vibrations in engineering applications.

A shaft is a rotating member that is used to transmit power or motion.
Lecture 6
It provides the axis of rotation for elements such as,
Buckling gears
pulleys
Lecture 7
Buckling flywheels
cranks
sprockets, etc.
Splines on a shaft allow one to attach a shaft to another short or motor, or
they can allow gears to shift horizontally (along the axis of the shaft).
There can be fixed gears on a shaft and freely rotating gears that cannot
shift along the axis of the shaft, but are not bound to the shaft and are free
to rotate about the shaft.

Stiffness Slopes
Vanessa For the steel countershaft shown find the slope of the shaft at each bearing.
Restrepo Assume the bearings constitute simple supports. Assume the relationship
between T1 and T2 is 3T1 = 20T2. E = 30 × 106 psi and I = 0.05 in4.
