ME - SEMESTER– 1 (NEW) • EXAMINATION – WINTER - 2022

Subject Code: 3711101 Date: 24 Feb 2023

Subject Name: Advanced Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer
Tim[Link] AM TO 01:00 PM Total Marks: 70
Instructions:
1. Attempt all questions.
2. Make suitable assumptions wherever necessary.
3. Figures to the right indicate full marks.
4. Use of Heisler chart, shape factor chart, data book of empirical relation and property
table for air and water is permitted after verification.

Q.1 (a) Derive the expression for the availability associated with the closed system (∅) in the 07
following form

(b) Write down the expressions for the physical laws that govern each mode of heat 07
transfer, and identify the variables involved in each relations.
Q.2 (a) Explain the Clausius theorem for reversible process and reversible cycle. Also explain 07
the Clausius inequality.
(b) In an heat exchanger (parallel flow type) waters enter at 50°C and leaves at 70°C while 07
oil (specific gravity = 0.82, specific heat = 2.6 kJ/kg K) enters at 240°C and leaves at
90°C. If the surrounding temperature is 27°C. Determine the loss in availability on the
basis of one kg of oil per second.
OR
(b) What are Heisler charts? Explain the significance of Heisler charts in solving transient 07
conduction problems.
Q.3 (a) An egg with a mean diameter of 40 mm and initially at 20 0C is placed in a 07
boiling water pan for 4 minutes and found to be boiled to consumer’s test. For
how long should a similar egg for the same consumer be boiled when taken
from a refrigerator at 5 0C. Take the following properties for egg:
ρ = 1200 kg/m3, c = 2 kJ/kg K, k = 10 W/mK and h = 100 W/m2K
(b) Determine the steady state temperature distribution along the length of a pin fin, whose 07
tip loses the heat to the surrounding. Also obtain the expression of fin efficiency and
fin effectiveness.
OR
Q.3 (a) Show that for a sphere transferring heat to the surroundings, the minimum value 07
of hd/k = 2.
(b) For a plane wall with internal heat generation, derive the equation of temperature 07
distribution across the wall. Also derive the equation for maximum temperature when
heat is transferred from the two sides of the wall to the surrounding fluid.
Q.4 (a) Air at 27 0C and 1 atm flows over a flat plate at a velocity of 3 m/s. Calculate 07
the boundary layer thickness at distances of 25 and 45 cm from the leading edge
of the plate. Calculate the mass flow which enters the boundary layer between x
= 25 cm and x = 45 cm. The viscosity of air at 27 0C is 1.85 x 10-5 kg/ms.
Assume unit depth in z – direction.
(b) Derive the energy equation for laminar boundary layer for the flow over horizontal 07
plate.
OR
Q.4 (a) A cylindrical body of 300 mm diameter and 1.6 m height is maintained at a 07
constant temperature of 36.5 0C. the surrounding air temperature is 13.5 0C.
1
Find out the amount of heat to be generated by the body per hour, if ρ = 1.025
kg/m3, cp =0.96 kg/kgK, υ = 15.6 x 10-6m2/s, k = 0.0892 kJ/mhK and β = 1/298
K-1, Assume Nu = 0.12([Link])1/3.
(b) Derive the heat transfer coefficient for the film condensation on vertical plate. 07
Q.5 (a) A cubical oven has inside sides equal to 0.4 m. One of the faces of the oven 07
forms the door. If the five other inside faces are black and maintained at 600 0C.
Find the rate of heat loss if the oven door is kept open.
(b) Two large parallel plates with ε = 0.5 each, are maintained at different temperature and 07
are exchanging heat only by radiation. Two equally large radiation shields with surface
emissivity 0.05 are introduced in parallel to the plates. Find the percentage reduction in
net heat transfer by radiation.
OR
Q.5 (a) A long steel rod, 22 mm in diameter, is to be heated from 420°C to 540°C. It is placed 07
concentrically in a long cylindrical furnace which has an inside diameter of 180 mm.
The inner surface of the furnace is at a temperature of 1100°C, and has an emissivity of
0.82. If the surface of the rod has an emissivity of 0.62, find the time required for the
heating operation. Take for steel : c = 0.67 kJ/kg K, ρ= 7845 kg/m3.
(b) An infinite slab of width B is initially at a uniform temperature 𝑇𝑖 . The temperature of 07
face at 𝑥 = 0 is exposed to 𝑇𝑎 and at 𝑥 = B is exposed to 𝑇𝑏. Using numerical analysis,
determine the temperature distribution in slab as a function of time.
