Custom Controller Emulator Setup for CATIA

This document provides a step-by-step guide for setting up and using a Custom Controller Emulator (CE) with CATIA, including license setup and configuration of the post processor. Key steps include selecting IMS in the Machining section, enabling material removal computation, and properly assigning the machine and workpiece settings. The document also emphasizes the importance of recording origin offsets and collision settings before running the simulation.

Setting Up and Using Custom Controller Emulator

Updated September 13, 2019

These are the few steps you will need to follow to use your custom CE with CATIA. Ensure you set
up your license (using license installation guide) previous to attempting to use post processor in
CATIA.

1) In the Tools Menu under Options, in the Machining section you will need to select IMS. Take
note of the file path listed in the PATH section as this drives where the post processor must be
placed. (ex. C:\Program Files\Dassault Systemes\B23\win_b64\startup\Manufacturing)

2) The Machining Simulation section, under NC Machine Tool Simulation find the Simulation Tab. On this
tab there is a button for “Enable Material Removal Computation during machine simulation”, ensure
this box is checked.

3) In whichever path was designated in CATIA should be a handful of files including a folder
IMSCE. This is the folder where the controller emulator must be placed in order to be usable
in CATIA.

4) Then open the Part Operation and select the machine button.

800 Broadway – Haverhill, MA 01832 USA – TEL 978-556-0077 – FAX 978-556-0171 – [Link]
5) The machine editor dialog has a number of relevant settings for your post processor. You can
designate.
a. The custom controller emulator to be used (Controller Emulator drop down)
b. The ability to import the CATIA machine model (‘Assign a machine from file
selection’ Button at Top of dialog)

6) The Machine can also be assigned to the product using the “Assign Machine from File”

800 Broadway – Haverhill, MA 01832 USA – TEL 978-556-0077 – FAX 978-556-0171 – [Link]
7) Once a machine is brought in the workpiece must be mounted to the machine.
8) SAVE INITIAL STATE

9) For each tool, the cutter Corrector ID must be set to match the corrector used in NC
programming. For Fanuc this refers to the H code used for the tool in the NC file.

10) Any Origin Offset must be recorded in the Workpeice Origin Mangement Table. This table
shall contain the offset from tool gauge point to the Workpeice origin, and due to CATIA’s
internal requirements must be in metric (MM). Found by double clicking the manufacturing
program and then the button on the bottom right.

11) COLISSION SETTINGS

12) After setting all relevant values, you can run the simulation using the ‘Simulate Machine using
NC Code’ opition available by right clicking the manufacturing program. Or by double
clicking the manufacturing program and clicking the ‘Starts Machine Simulation’ on the lower
right.
