Computer Networks Overview for Exhibition

This document defines and describes different types of computer networks. It discusses that a computer network allows devices to exchange data by passing it through connections. The best known network is the Internet. The types of networks covered are local area networks (LAN), wide area networks (WAN), and different network topologies like star, ring, and bus. Modems are used to connect computers to telephone lines for Internet access. Video conferencing and email are also discussed as methods for communication over networks between locations.

WHAT ARE COMPUTER NETWORKS?

is a network that allows computers to exchange data. In computer networks, network nodes pass data to each other through connections-best known computer network is internet.

TYPES OF COMPUTER NETWORK:

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Modem Video conferencing Email internet Local area network (LAN) Wide area network (WAN) Network topologies: star, ring, bus

INTERNET

1) MODEM(PURPOSE):

For communication between the computers-use of telephone system, a device is needed between the phone line and the computer. Such a device is the modem. Modem setup doneinternet access.

INTERNET:
2)VIDEOCONFERENCI NG: allows users in different locations to do face-to-face meetingsconvenient for business usersdifferent cities or countries. 3) EMAIL:

system for sending and receiving messages electronically over a computer network, between personal computers.

4) WIDE AREA NETWORK( WAN): a relatively too large computer network. A WAN is useful for large companies with offices or factories in widely separated areas.

5) LOCAL AREA NETWORK (LAN): computers are relatively close together- small LAN is set up to provide Internet access to all the computers in a small office or a home. E.g. Sharing a printer or scanner.

6) NETWORK TOPOLOGIES

STAR

RING

BUS

FEATURES OF THE TOPOLOGIES:

Star:

connects everything to a host computer or the central hub which handles the network tasks, all signals pass through the host/switch/hub. E.g. good for home use.

Ring:

connects the computers and devices one to the other in a circle-no central host computer that holds all the data. Communication flows in one direction around the ring.

Bus:

connects the computer to the same communications line. Communications goes both directions along the line. All the computers can communicate with each other without having to go through the server.

WORKSHEET:

LAN and WAN stands for? Modem is used for connecting______ to the computer. An email can be with the help of a modem.
