Understanding Space in Art

The document discusses key elements and principles of art, including space, perspective, positive and negative space, and techniques for showing depth. Specifically, it defines foreground, middle ground and background; overlapping shapes, size diminishment and value shifts to show depth; and one-point and two-point perspective using vanishing points. Examples are provided of works that demonstrate these concepts.

Introduction to Art

Space
Space is the feel of or actual depth within an art work. Real space is three-dimensional. It can go around, through, or in between.

Salvador Dali Three Ages 1940

Foreground the area in a picture closest to the viewer.

Middle ground is the area between the foreground and background Background is the area furthest from the viewer.

Look at the next image.

1. Identify what is in the foreground, middle ground, and background. 2. Are there areas that pass through multiple planes? Explain.

Diego Rivera Mercado de Flores

Positive Space is the actual objects or subjects in a picture

Negative Space is the area AROUND and THROUGH objects or subjects in a picture

There are FOUR ways to show space in an art work.

Overlapping Shapes

Things get lighter and cooler as they go back in space

Things get smaller as they go back in space

Things placed higher in the picture plane are further away

One Point Perspective a type of perspective that uses one vanishing point

Vanishing Point A point on the horizon that parallel lines come together

Two Point Perspective a type of perspective that uses two vanishing points

Can you tell which type of perspective is being represented?

MC Escher Belvedere 1958

Okumura Masonabu Belvedere 1958

Practice: One-Point Perspective

Use the worksheet to make the boxes three dimensional.

Time: 10 minutes

Project: One-Point Perspective

Use the worksheet to draw a room. You can put what you want in it, but it MUST have windows, a door, something on each wall, and some pieces of furniture. Color your room completely with color pencils.
