Q1) in What Ways Does Your Media: Product Use, Develop or Challenge Forms and Conventions of Real Media Products?

This document discusses the key conventions of music videos, digipaks, and magazine advertisements and how the media product adheres to or challenges these conventions. It provides examples of iconic artists like Jay-Z and Biggie Smalls that demonstrate conventions like "rags to riches" narratives in their music videos. The digipak design achieves conventions through consistent imagery relating to the song title while illustrating both artists. However, the magazine advertisement design is simpler and plainer, making it less professional and failing to highlight both the artist and album name as conventions require.

Q1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media

products?

Key Conventions
Music Video:
Visually stylish artistic mise-en-scene Cutting related to the rhythm of the music Intercutting between performance and images or story Experimental use of camera/editing (hand held camera, distortion of colours) Often break the rules of continuity editing. Can use lots of jump cuts Lots of use of digital effects

Digipak:
Visual image/key to the production Band/artist name - allow audience to identify band/artist Album title - on main cover and along the spine Track list/What's on the DVD Basic background information of the band/artist (occasions reviews from companies)

Magazine Advert: Main image Artist name Album title Release date of the album Record label logo Reviews from other media industries Previous successes e.g latest singles released

Before constructing our product, we thought it would be useful to research the conventions of digipaks, music videos and magazine adverts so that we fulfill them. We did this by looking at particular groups and artists, how they reflect their star image into their ancillary products and what they tend to include. For example, Little Mix. Also, we looked at the general layout to insure that we are familiar with the market.

Little Mix Research

In regard to our genre, we chose an R&B/Rap style which is completely different to our initial concept styled idea due to the fact that concept based videos lack a form of conventions. Our video links to the idea of the rapper going from rags to riches that is hugely present within real rap music videos. This consists of the artist having to face hard times and needing resilience to persevere in the industry. Iconic artists who demonstrate this are those such as Biggie Smalls also known as the Notorious B.I.G and Jay Z, being a modern example.

Biggie Smalls and arguably his biggest hit, Juicy

Personally, I believe that our digipak achieved its purpose in resembling a professional digipak within the real industry. It could be argued that found it easier to stick to the conventions rather than the music video as they were a lot more grounded. We kept our costume, colour scheme and theme consistent whilst illustrating both artists equally. Each image relates to the title of the song Forward with the cover being Ace facing the future and Anne on the back looking over the past.

Digipak
As you can see we used a similar idea to Rihanna by using one image for a whole section of the digipak, in order to resemble the theme of the album.

We struggled with creating the magazine cover, not knowing how to present it appropriately and ended up being quite simple with our design. It has all the relevant information needed, however the appearance is quite basic and plain, making it look amateur. In relation to conventions, we knew it was key for the artist name to stand out, hence we attempted to make it bold and eye catching. As a consequence, this didnt highlight the album name and caused it to look more like a poster rather than advert.

Magazine Advert
Ellie Goldings magazine advert is similar in the use of colours, layout and cut out image of her.
