Objectives
At the end of 30-minute structured health teaching, the
learners will be able to:
Define what is nutrition
Discuss the importance of proper nutrition.
Explain the disadvantages of inadequate and improper nutrition.
Identify the common improper nutritional practices.
Identify the foods that falls under the three basic food groups (Go Grow
and Glow)
What Is Nutrition?
Utilization of food to grow, repair and maintain our
bodies;
The study of food and how we use it.
The intake of food considered in relation to bodys
dietary needs.
Importance of proper nutrition
Provides a Healthy Heart
A diet low in fats, cholesterol and sodium can
lower your risk of heart disease.
For Bone and Teeth Strength
- A diet rich in calcium keeps your bones and teeth
strong and helps prevent bone loss associated with
osteoporosis.
Low-fat dairy products, such as milk, dark green
vegetables,
fruit juices and cereals are good sources of calcium.
Provides Energy
- Increased energy levels are the immediate benefits of
switching to a healthy diet.
Eliminating excess fats, sugars prevent increase of
blood sugar level.
. Unhealthy carbohydrates : Candy
Healthy Carbohydrates : fruits and vegetables are most
nutritious.
For A Healthy Brain
Proper nutrition increases blood flow to your brain, protecting
brain cells and helping to prevent Alzheimers disease.
For a brain healthy diet, avoid fried foods and flavor
baked, steamed and grilled foods.
Weight Control
To prevent weight gain, you must eat no more
calories than you burn each day.
For weight loss, you must eat fewer calories
than your body burns daily

You will gain weight if you consume
more calories than you expend
Nutrient Deficiencies
While it is likely to be adequate in protein and
total fat, a poor diet can lead to deficiencies of
certain nutrients
High Blood Pressure
A high-sodium diet is a risk factor for high blood
pressure, which can increase your risk for stroke, heart
disease and kidney disease.
High Cholesterol Levels
Many dietary factors affect your cholesterol levels, and your
cholesterol levels affect your risk for heart disease.
Pizza, baked desserts, ice cream ,sausage and bacon, are among
the top sources of saturated fat
Common improper Nutritional Practices
High sodium intake
The amount of dietary salt intake can affect blood pressure level
e.g. eating junk foods without drinking plenty of water.
According to WHO the recommended amount of salt intake per person
per day is less than 5 grams.
High intake of sweet food
Eating too much sweets or sugar can cause early stages of diabetes in
adolescents and one of the main cause of tooth decay.
Skipping meals
Skipping meals can alter your proper muscle and bone
development resulting to malnutrition.
High cholesterol intake
too much intake of fatty foods could cause undesirable
weight gain and heart disease.
