Buildability in Construction Design

This document discusses buildability in construction, defined as the ability to construct a building efficiently, economically, and to agreed quality levels from its constituent materials, components, and sub assemblies. It notes that buildability considers the ease of construction subject to overall building requirements, and is a shared responsibility among all building disciplines. Key aspects that influence buildability include spatial organization, physical characteristics of materials/components/subassemblies, functions/performance, conversion of materials, and design characteristics like standardization, simplicity, and integrated systems.

DCC2052:

BUILDABILITY
OF DESIGN

By :
Dayana Safra
binti Mohd Sopian
INTRODUCTION
Design details are sometimes very
difficult and even impossible to
construct. This is often result from
design teams not considering
problems which the contractor has to
face on site. It is also seen as a result
of fragmentation between the design
and construction practitioners.
(Moore, 1998)
DEFINITION
Buildability can be defined as the
ability to construct a building
efficiently, economically and to
agreed quality levels from its
constituent materials,
components and sub assemblies.
DEFINITION
Buildability can be defined as the
ability to construct a building
efficiently, economically and to
agreed quality levels from its
constituent materials,
components and sub assemblies.
(Ferguson)
DEFINITION
Buildability can be defined as ‘
the extent to which the design of
a building facilitates ease of
construction, subject to the
overall requirements for the
completed buildings
(Construction Industry Research
and Information Association)
“Buildability is the share of the
responsibility of all those disciplines
whose constitute the
multidisciplinary building team
including architects, engineers,
surveyors, building contractors and
sub-contractors, and not the
individual responsibility of the
architect.
(Griffith, 1994)
