Understanding Big Data: Uses and History

This document provides an overview of big data. It defines big data as large data sets that cannot be managed by traditional databases due to their size and type. The data comes from various sources like sensors, devices, social media, and is often generated in real-time. Analyzing big data allows users to make better decisions using previously inaccessible data. The document traces the history of data use from ancient accounting to the emergence of big data in the 1990s. It provides examples of big data applications in healthcare to improve patient care and in logistics to optimize delivery routes.

What it is BIG DATA?

 Big data is a term applied to data sets whose size or type is beyond the ability of traditional
relational databases to capture, manage, and process the data .
 Big data comes from sensors, devices, video/audio, networks, log files, transactional
applications, web, and social media - much of it generated in real time and in a very large
scale.
 Analyzing big data allows analysts, researchers, and business users to make better and
faster decisions using data that was previously inaccessible or unusable.
History of Big Data

 The earliest records of using data to track and control businesses date back from 7.000
years ago when accounting was introduced in Mesopotamia in order to record the growth
of crops and herds
 The first major data project is created in 1937
 The ‘90s the creation of data was spurred as more and more devices were connected to the
internet.
 90% of the available data has been created in the last two years and the term Big Data has
been around since 2005
