INTRODUCTION
IFF refers to identification of friend or foe.
It’s based on RADAR
• There are 2 types of RADARS :
1. Primary surveillance RADAR (PSR).
2. Secondary surveillance RADAR(SSR).
PSR
It doesn’t rely on active cooperation of the target.
EM radiation is pulsed from a directional antenna on the ground.
SSR
Forms a part of ATC RADAR system, only specially equipped targets
give a return to ground station.SSR transmitter radiates pulses of energy
from radiated antenna.
IFF comes under the secondary surveillance RADAR.

INTRODUCTION
An aircraft equipped with an IFF transponder in path of radiated energy will reply
specifically with coded pulse RF,provided it recognizes the interrogation has been
valid.
Coded reply received by the ground station is decoded and an appropriate
message is given to ATC on PPI(pulse position indicators) display.
The reply message consists of information related to identity ,attitude and
emergencies.
One interrogation consists of a pair of pulse of RF energy the spacing between the
pulses being one of the 4 intervals.
Different modes of Interogation and coded but different time intervals.
• The actual scenario of interrogation and reply is been scaled down and being
represented.

Problem Statement
• Flying of Aircraft in any area without prior Intimation is unsafe for
both the aircraft and the people of the territory.
• Moving into other territory without self identification is restricted
and should be strictly avoided as per the protocols.
• Keeping the Defined Airspace and National Waters Safe.
• Can be used for factory or buildings security, employees or people
who have authorized access to the building can be given a card,
with RFid which cuts short the security check time and also
reduces the capital invested on security.
To overcome the above mentioned problems we are designing the
IFF TRANSPONDER.

IFF MODES
EMERGENCY CODES
These codes are transmitted from the transponders to the ground
station and we are representing the following codes in our project
1.7700-Emergency (SOS)
2.7600-Radio Failure(Lost Communications)
3.7500-Aircraft Hijacking
Inputs are given using KEYPAD Interface.
Expected outcomes of the project
• Establish communication effectively between the RF
transceivers.
• Define Mode A, Mode C and Mode S along with emergency
modes.
• Intermode interrogations and the corresponding actions.
• Working of the extra alert systems installed in case of
emergency modes .

Application
Preventing Friendly Fires & Eliminating Losses.
Detects Danger Instantly and ensuring Protection.
Enabling instant communication in case of emergency
situations on aircraft.
Can be implemented in building security where large number of
people check in and check out regularly.
Can be used to detect Intruders.

Application
Advantages
• It enables military and civilian air traffic control interrogation
systems to identify aircraft, vehicles or forces as friendly and to
determine their bearing and range from the interrogator.
• The advantage of the transponder is that the coded pulses
“squawked” by the aircraft transponders after being interrogate
might typically be transmitted at a 10 watt ERP, which is much
stronger than the microwatt skin return to the primary radar.
• Real time monitoring
• Better energy management
• When implemented in building security it saves lot of energy for
the personnel as manual process is cut down and its time saving as
well.
