Terzaghi's Bearing Capacity Theory

Terzaghi developed a general theory for calculating the bearing capacity of shallow foundations in 1943. The theory assumes a homogeneous, isotropic soil that obeys the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion and experiences general shear failure. It models the failure zone under the foundation as consisting of three regions: an active triangular zone, a radial shear zone, and a passive Rankine zone. The bearing capacity equation equates the vertical forces of passive earth pressure, soil cohesion, soil weight, and surcharge load. Factors in the equation depend on the soil's friction angle and account for limited footing dimensions. The theory is valid for strip footings and requires modification for other shapes.

TERZAGHI’S BEARING CAPACITY THEORY
Terzaghi in 1943 gave a general bearing capacity theory for a strip
foundation, called “Terzaghi’s Theory on Bearing Capacity
Analysis“
Basic Assumptions:
 The base of footing is rough.
 Df ≤ B.
 The shear strength of the soil above the base of footing is
neglected. The soil above the base is replaced by uniform
surcharge (q= γDf ).
 Load is vertical and uniformly distributed.
 The soil mass is homogeneous and isotropic.
 The soil obeys Mohr-coulomb equation.
 General shear failure.

TERZAGHI’S BEARING CAPACITY THEORY
The failure zone under the foundation can be separated into three
parts:

1. Zone I :
The triangular zone ( Active
zone)

2. Zone II :
The radial shear zone

3. Zone III :
Rankine passive zone

Forces acting in the rigid zone ABC are :

1.The resultant passive earth

pressure Pp

2. The force due to cohesion C

3.Weight of soil wedge ABC

4.Surcharge load acting

downward.

Therefore, from equilibrium condition in vertical direction:

The resultant passive earth pressure

Pp has three components:
1. (Pp)γ-due to weight of shear
zone
2. (Pp)c due to cohesion
3. (Pp)q due to the surcharge
Substituting these values in above
equation and solving, we get

This is Terzaghi’s bearing capacity equation

The factors Nγ,  Nq, and Nc are called bearing capacity factors which
depend on the angle of shearing resistance Φ of the soil.

TERZAGHI’S BEARING CAPACITY THEORY
Nγ,  Nq, and Nc are defined by following equations:

Bearing capacity for footing having limited dimension:

Square footing,

Circular footing,

Rectangular footing,

Local shear failure,

Limitations:
 Only applicable to shallow foundation.
 Only valid for the case of general shear failure.
 Only applicable to strip footing.
 Has to be modified for other type of footing like circular, square
and rectangular.
