PRINCIPALS ROLES
AND
RESPONSIBILITIES
BY: NECLA KUCUK
DEFINITION OF A SCHOOL LEADER
• Successful principals are the ones who emphases on the progression and welfare of the
people and the communities to which they serve. These principals share their expertise
and knowledge to help people improve and accomplish their goals as extensively as
possible.
• Also, they comprehend the significance of constructive school culture and how it can
help student's success and professional growth in the school building.
• Then Principals and teachers alike are self-assured in their working interactions and feel
that they can encounter any challenge set before them together.
STUDENTS ACADEMIC SUCCESS
• Positive school culture is the fundamental cause why other aspects of education successfully
help students flourish. Creating a positive school culture will encourage learning and
engagement among students and the school community (Habegger, 2008).
• Therefore, principals should improve a relationship with students among caring teachers and
other school personnel to empower each individual to feel respected and valued (Alvoid &
Black, 2014).
• Also, principals need to make infallible teachings supported by their state academic content
while enduring constant improvement in the building to support educational growth.
CULTIVATING LEADERSHIP IN OTHERS
• All leaders must create a shared mission and vision where everyone in the building is
committed to collaborate and work together to reach the same goal.
• For this collaboration to happen, principals need to provide joint planning time where
both parties sit down and discuss data, student behavior, or other job-related issues
(Habegger, 2008).
CULTIVATING LEADERSHIP IN OTHERS
• Teachers need to feel that they are part of the team where they received constant
encouragement, professionalism, and empowerment from their principal and the rest of
the administration team (Alvoid & Black, 2014).
• Successful leaders are the ones who understand the correlations between success and
teamwork, which increase student learning, content knowledge, morale, and job
satisfaction while reducing teacher isolation.
SCHOOL COMMUNITY
• Leaders who are focused on student achievement need to understand that parent's
involvement is another puzzle piece to improve student learning.
• Therefore, leaders need to create an environment where teachers greet and understand
parents, their needs, and concerns. Parents should receive data from the school that shows
academic and social growth or needs when interacting with teachers or school leaders.
• Moreover, school leaders must open doors for school-family interaction outside of
academic learning by creating events and activities where all stakeholders get together
and socialized.
SCHOOL COMMUNITY
• Although principals have limitless responsibilities in their buildings, such as creating
positive school culture and climate for students and staff, managing a respectful school
community, and supervising conflicts between staff, students, and parents, they need to
make sure every individual is safe and cared for under their supervision while the
learning is continuously happening (Alvoid & Black, 2014).
