Here are some key points to focus on for your advanced reading on multiplication and division of integers: - Review the definition of integers as whole numbers that include both positive and negative numbers, including zero. - Learn the rules for multiplying integers: - A positive integer multiplied by a positive integer is positive - A positive integer multiplied by a negative integer is negative - A negative integer multiplied by a negative integer is positive - Understand that multiplying an integer by zero always results in zero. - For division of integers, focus on: - Dividing a positive integer by a positive integer results in a positive quotient - Dividing a positive integer by a negative integer or a negative integer by a positive integer

“ROW, ROW, ROW YOUR BOAT”
Row, row, row your boat Same Signs Add and Keep

Life is but a dream. Then You Will Be Exact
What is an INTEGER?

An INTEGER is a positive or
negative whole number, including
0. it does not have decimals and
fractions.
Examples:

7, -15, 7685, -200, 25

RULES IN ADDING (+) INTEGERS

Rule # 1:
The sum of two positive
integers is always positive. 5
+1= 6
RULES IN ADDING (+) INTEGERS

Rule # 2:
The sum of two negative
integers is always negative.
-5 + (-1) = -6
RULES IN ADDING (+) INTEGERS
Rule # 3:
The sum of a positive and a negative integer
could be positive, negative or zero.
When you add a positive and a negative integer,
you are subtracting. Then, you give the answer
the sign of a greater absolute value.
Example: 5 + (-1) = 4 -5 + 1 = -4 -5 + (-5) = -10
RULES IN SUBTRACTING (-) INTEGERS

To subtract an integer, add its

opposite.
RULES IN SUBTRACTING (-) INTEGERS

You will need to correctly

change all subtraction
problems into addition
problems!
THE THREE (3) STEPS

STEP 1: “SAME”
Keep the first integer the
same.
THE THREE (3) STEPS

STEP 2: “CHANGE”
Change the subtraction sign
into addition sign.
THE THREE (3) STEPS

STEP 3: “TAKE THE OPPOSITE

NUMBER”
Take the opposite of the number that
immediately follows the newly place
addition sign.
Example: 5-(-2)= 5+2=7
What is a NUMBER LINE?

A number line is a visual representation of numbers on a straight

line. This line is used to compare numbers that are placed at equal
intervals on an infinite line that extends on both sides, horizontally.

Positive integers increase in increments of one as you move to the

right.
Negative integers mirror this moving to the left of zero, however,
even though they appear to be getting bigger, they are actually
getting smaller.
NUMBER LINE
DIRECTIONS: Use a number line to solve the following
problems.
1. (-7) + (-4) =
2. 5 + (-2) =
3. (-8) – (-2) =
4. (-3) + 8 =
5. 3 – (-6) =

Guide Questions:
• How did you come up with your answer?
• How do you relate integer in real-world application?
DIRECTIONS: Solve the following by filling in the missing
integers.

1. ______ + -12 = 6
2. -38 - _____ = -40
3. _____ - (-8) = 38
4. -19 + _____ = -45
5. _____ + (-47) = -49
What would be the result if a positive integer is being added to a
positive integer?

What would be the result if a positive integer is being added to a

negative integer?

What is the answer if the factors being subtracted have the same
signs? What if they have different signs?
DIRECTIONS: Read carefully and solve.

1. When Christian woke up, his temperature was 97°F. Three hours later, it was 5°F
lower. What was her temperature then?
2. Aya has $50 left on her ATM account. If she withdraws an amount of $58, what is her
balance now?
3. An elevator is on the 18th floor. It goes down 10 floors and then up 4 floors. What floor
is the elevator now?
4. If it is 5° outside and the temperature will drop 17° in the next five hours. How cold
will it get?
5. Mark is playing with a dice, if the number that turns up is even, he will gain 5 times
the number that comes up. If it is odd, he will lose 10 times the number that comes up.
