FOUR GROUPS OF MUSICAL
INSTRUMENTS
1. Stringed instruments – have
strings which can be played by
means of a bow or by plucking
and strumming. Also known as
“ The Heart of the Musical
Instruments.”
2. Brass Instruments – are made of
metals. The tone is produced by
blowing into the mouthpiece.
3. Woodwind Instruments – are
generally made of wood. Sound is
produced by blowing into the
mouthpiece and by pressing the
holes on the side.
4. Percussion Instruments –
Percussion comes from the word
PERCUSS which means “to
strike.” These instruments are
made to sound by striking,
shaking, or plucking. Also
known as “The Battery of the
Musical Instruments.”
STRINGED INSTRUMENTS
[Link] – has four strings and played by
means of a bow.
[Link] – has six strings and is played by
means of plucking or strumming.
[Link] – popularly known as
“cello.” Strings are long, thick and
heavy.
[Link] Bass – known as “contrabass” or
“bass viol.” Has the lowest range in the
BRASS INSTRUMENTS
[Link] – the bass of the brass family. It has
deep, resonant quality.
[Link] – known as the “French Horn.” It
has four valves played by the left hand.
[Link] – similar to a trumpet, but shorter.
Partly cylindrical and partly conical in
shape.
[Link] – an Italian word meaning
“Large Trumpet.” Has a U-shaped slide to
change the pitch, instead of valves.
WOODWIND INSTRUMENTS
[Link] – used as a melody instrument.
It has a bird-like sound.
[Link] – a double-reed instrument.
Known as the “clown of the
orchestra.”

melodies. It has penetrating tone.

Percussion Intruments with Definite Pitch
1. Glockenspiel – a portable musical
instrument consisting of a series of
tuned metal bars. It is played by
striking with two wooden hammers.
2. Piano – most popular musical
instrument used at home and concerts.
3. Xylophone – made of tuned blocks
and produces a dry and firm timbre
when struck.
Percussion Instruments without Definite
Pitch
[Link] – made of 2 cup-shaped wooden
clappers held in the fingers and the palms of the
hand. Used by Spanish dancers.
[Link] – a small, single-headed, one-sided
drum covered with a piece of animal skin.
Played by striking or shaking.
[Link] – made of two large round brass plates
of equal sizes.
[Link] Drum – a large drum played with a soft-
headed stick. It has a low, heavy and thundering
sound.
